I guess that this thread is unlikely to win the "best thread of 2007" award.

Someone put it out of its misery.

im 18 years old and my dad bought me a yacht master for graduation, and i seriously dont like wearing it to places like school and such because i might get jumped, so i went to chinatown in new york and got me the exact same one but a fake and i wear that one more than the real one.

dont really care wat people think if they know its fake, because i got the real one at home. :)

i do wear the real one when im with my parents or go somewhere formal, but parties, school and just out doing something i wear the fake.

That's the way to do it. You're 18 years old and already so bright.

I've heard that some Royalties in Europe do the same thing. Sometimes, I wonder if the Queen of England's jewelry is the dup of its original counterpart while the real "McCoy" tacks away in the Tower of London safe and sound.

True, live your own life; don't worry about what other people think. You're on this earth NOT for anybody else but for yourself.

Cheer and be happy!

Wow well done you are a very lucky 18 yr old

I can understand you doing that... when the time is right I'm sure you'll wear the real one all the time

I'd never say anything... imagine if you pointed out that their Rolex was fake after they bought it thinking it was a genuine one spending thousands on the watch?

Ignorance is bliss in this circumstance I'd say! Once the money is gone, its gone most of the time.

Like others have said, enjoy YOUR watch and dont worry about what other people are doing!

Thank you all for sharing your 2 cents! Many interesting responses indeed.

Absolutely agree! We don't have to right to judge someone just by the watch they wear.
That's why I usually keep quiet when I see people wearing fakes.

However, you will get some sort of impression whether you like it or not.

I understand arrogance is treated quite negatively in many western countries, but in my part of the world, arrogance is often idolized, IF YOU ARE DESERVING.

Arrogance, pride, bragging rights, all these are synonymous.

Rolex has always marketed their watches as "a crown for every achievement". I'm sure many Rolex owners here have work very hard for their Rolex watches. This is one of the reasons why we love our Rolexes even more.
It's a trophy, we show it, we love it, and we are proud of it.

Many people may still consider a Rolex a tool watch, but 95% don't. It's now more classified as jewelry than a tool. Do most people honestly buy a Rolex just to tell the time? You can tell the time too with a Timex or Casio. There more reasons....but mostly because it's a Rolex, a watch brand "perceived" to be the best. The YM-II, no matter how ugly...is gonna be a big hit because it's a Rolex.

The problem for me is, it's very unfair to see, when someone who never really achieved anything in his life gets to wear a Rolex. The same thing for wannabes who haven't earned their due, and wears a fake Rolex.

Allow me to give you an analogy.

Let's say you went through 4 years of college and got your diploma. When it was time for you to show off your credentials, someone who barely finished high school, showed a similar "college" diploma he bought, without going through what you went through.

Legal implications aside, don't you feel it's unfair?

Yeah, I know the world is unfair, it has been for ages...and YES, it none of my business what other people wear (and vice-versa). We have to live with it, and make the best out of it.

Cheers!

I think there are a lot more people wearing fake Rolexes in Asia where it is a matter of status symbol than in the USA. I was born in Hong Kong and I was raised there till I was 12, so I know how you feel. It is your prerogative to think what you want and others has no right to criticize you.

I think what you meant was, you despised the pretense and the phony facade.

When we were in Hong Kong in March of this year, there too, merchants would tell us right out that their Rolexes were fakes. They had all models and the cost was about $100 US each. Unfortunately, they were NOT as honest in Mainland China.

Is Phnom Penh in Thailand? Beaches there must be beautiful.....envy!!!!

Sorry, but as a former software writer, I have a slightly different perspective, it seems, than some of my friends in this thread.

There is a hardcore -- and growing -- subset of computer users that view it as their right to use software without paying. Cracks, serial sharing, etc. Possibly worse still are the turkeys who break your software then sell it for their own profit (there was a report that MSFT had sold fewer than 300 copies of genuine Vista in Shanghai -- however, FAKE Vista is for sale in every DVD or computer store in China).

If a person goes out and gets a fake thinking "tee hee, it's just good fun," they're stealing and supporting the work of other thieves.

Rationalize if you like -- it's a victimless crime, or it can only impact people who are rich anyway -- but you're engaging in something you know is wrong.

The factories that make these knockoffs tend to provide miserable conditions for young workers. I saw one in Hubei Province. Rather than viewing the situation as though you are providing work for young people in a rural hellhole in China, I consider the replica-buyer as supporting the modern equivalent of the slave trade.

I was sold a fake bracelet -- got my money back -- and it was a piece of junk.

I would definitely think less of a person who tolerated theft (as I see it), supported the nasty knockoff trade, and could tolerate such crummy quality.

Thanks,

Submadaterant

I, too will never buy or own any fake, replica, counterfeit goods just because they are against the law. There is no argument from here.

Thanks for your geography lesson. Now I am all embarrassed by not knowing the name of the Capitol of Cambodia. My roommate was involved in the Cambodia invasion in 1969 so he really called me a "dummy".

In the Xiu Shui, which is a huge mega-department store of fakes in Beijing, people sell fake Rolexes under signs saying "DUE TO A LEGAL SETTLEMENT, ITEMS BEARING THE BRANDNAMES CARTIER, MONT BLANC, ROLEX (...etc) MAY NOT BE SOLD."

The only reason I go to the danged place is that my tailor keeps a store there.

If anyone comes to town and wants excellent bespoke work done, don't hesitate to PM me and I will be happy to recommend him.

I had a shirt done up to match my blue DJ.

You are so classy!

Both my roommate and myself found it was very difficult to find any clothings in China that were our sizes. We are NOT particularly big guys either.

Fake anything sucks. People that wear fake stuff are fake people and are they are a fraud. If its ok then it must be ok to make and have fake money. I guess the reason is I make real money and buy real stuff and I was rasied that way. I`m not a mechanic but I buy real snap-on tools not fake snap-0n tools. But there is nothing wrong with wearing a cheap watch, I am friends with some very very wealthy people, I`m talking private jet rich (I`m not one of them) and most wear cheap watches, for some reason I don`t understand.

Regards,
Lane

For some people, watches just NOT their "thing". However, I am sure the same people will pay big money for what they like, e.g. paintings, fine wine, jewelry, etc. Some will pay thousands for a rare baseball card while I won't spend 10 cent for the same card if I can't sell it. Different strokes for different folks and that's what makes this world revolve.

Unlike in Asia, I don't think Rolexes are that popular in the UK. I didn't see anyone wearing a Rolex in London and I was there many many times. Fake Rolexes would be a bad seller in the UK, I believe.

Seriously, I was NOT kidding. I am Chinese myself and can speak and read Chinese but haven't written in 32 years so I've forgotten most of the characters.

Are you Greek origin?

Maybe he is a "fake" that's why you don't want to understAnd him. I bet you didn't talk like him before you migrated to the U.S. of A. Cut him some slack.

I think what he is trying to ask is if in America (or NZ) can a regular Clerk afford a Rolex. In China only the very rich bussiness men can afford.

The answer is Yes. Many Clerks, soldeirs, police, factory workers, etc... Can afford a Rolex if they want one. Just may have to save up a little longer. Many single enlisted soldiers buy a Rolex, cause if they are serving overseas for a year, it only amounts to 1 months pay. Used to be in the old days when I was in the military, the unit I was in, Soldiers would get a cash bonus for re-enlistment or get extra cash from being oversease on a 6 month deployment and when back to the USA or after their bonus would buy a Rolex Sub/GMT and a Harley.
