Replace the face?
Hi, I have my grandfathers Rolex that is 46 years old I took it in to see what it would take to get working adn was told it needed a tune up, new crystal and new face? Cost $250. I am planing on giving it to my brother for college graduation. And wanted to make sure replacing the face would not destroy the value. I do not know what model as it is still at the repair shop it was given to my grandfater in 1965 and has a leather band. Any advise would be appreciated.

Welcome to TRF. It would help to see pictures of the watch. If it's being serviced by a jeweler, I would not let them touch the face. The crystal should only be replaced it is damaged. Also when they service it, they should do a pressure test to make sure it is water resistent within specifications after it is serviced.

I agree with God...
You should seldom replace the face or the hands as that is almost always where the majority of value is.. of course, if it is beyond usefulness, then there may be an exception..

Welcome.
As stated it's generally not a good idea to change the dial, perhaps more so in your case as the watch has such special meaning. Certainly have it serviced, but barring something really bad I would leave the dial/hands as is. This is an heirloom piece. Post a photo and we can be more specific. |
