Dial is not that bad. Good cleaning, new glass and new insert and you'll have a nice watch. Price is outrageaous. Worth in this condition max 8-9k IMHO.

Andrew Shear and Mark Lerman have had a few FF Reds that sold recently in the $11k range, and they were really nice - no need to call the fungus-removal squad hah!

Even w/o buyers premium this is $14k....I wonder what the buyer was thinking or what we don't know about this particular watch? The other FF Red in the auction went for $7.5k w/ buyers premium, no B&P though. But still...

Maybe the fungus is a rare truffle and the person who bought it is a chef...lol

No way to tell how they talked it up at the auction. I think that the grim just shows that it hasn't been cleaned or refinished which is great.

Yea I'm with ya there - maybe sat in a moist drawer its whole life. Nice beveled edges on those lugs! Not $17.5k worth of unpolished, untampered with watch, though, even without that growth on it!

Now that I look at again the dial doesn't look so hot. The center of it looks as if maybe it was over oiled at one time. What do you guys think.

That is a ridiculous price for that watch in NOS condition, and completely laughable with the fungus and missing steel

It was probably some rich dude's assistant who was commanded to go and buy it and simply got overzealous.

Remember on Seinfeld when Elaine bid too much for the Kennedy golf clubs? :)

Alot of the pieces in that auction sold for prices well beyond what you would find reasonable. Sotheby's does a good job talking up items, as a good house should.

Hahah and then they get thrown out of Jerry's Saab while Kramer and Newman and chasing the stolen Saab out of state!! Hilarious episode!

Yea - and they set the "range" at something ridiculous as well - red subs for $6-8. $6k, really!? The other one went for $7.5k w/ buyer's premium which isn't bad. I didn't look at the watch too closely though.

Well the ranges mean nothing in these auctions as they usually get blown thru on nice pieces. As for this one - no comment. As for price for a mint FF Red- prices have been up around $11k as of late- again for a mint one!

Morning chaps from London

Well I've just paid £10 k so $15-16 k for one of the first ft first Reds with the open 6's albeit in absolutely mint condition with ALL the paperwork so punched certificate and guarantee booklet, leather wallet, box, original purchase receipt, Rolex service papers, etc etc and thought i probably paid 10-15% over the top. Also original 9315 folded link bracelet stamped 70 and caseback 1.70 clean serial number on lugs at 2.76m. Photos to follow when it lands :-)

For something perfectly original I don't think it is crazy. The bezel, pearl, hands and dial are perfect, the best I've seen in a while. The roughness you see on the dial looks like crazing of the crystal, not damage to the dial itself. A few minutes with a toothbrush and soap, and a bit of polywatch, and that thing is one of the finest examples you'll see aside from a time-capsule NOS item.

It takes more than one bidder to lift the price so high so maybe there is something about this watch that we don't know like it belonged to Kieth Chegwin or something...
