Come to pappa

First post here so be gentle :)

I will be collecting my brand new aquisition at some point over the next 9-10 days when it arrives at my dealer and really looking forward to it.

First off a little watch history. Like the rest of you guys I love a great watch. Here's what I have so far.

My first good watch was a birthday pressie from an aunt back in the 70's. An Omega speedmaster no less which I still own and treasure.

A long gap later (around 1990) I purchased a Cartier Pasha in solid 18k gold (hey, what did I know about watches )

I quite liked the way it looked at first but after a few years (and a few stone in weight) mainly kept it in the safe as it really didn't suit my big wrists so I sold it on. I then purchased a S/S Submariner. Absolutely loved this watch.

A good friend of mine had a blue faced gold/steel version which looked great. I then decided to follow his lead and 'upgraded'. After a while, I'd sort of gone off yellow gold. It wasn't so much bling really it just didn't seem to suit my personal taste.

Sold that and bought another S/S Sub. I adore this watch and I don't think I'll ever make the mistake of selling it again as I know I'll go and buy another so no point. It keeps good time, is both understated yet recognised from a mile off, easy to keep clean (just walk in the shower with it) and a joy to wear.

We live in London but have a small holiday home in Florida where much of my wifes family lives. On a recent visit my brother-in-law was talking about watches and I brought up the Daytona subject. Now although Rob appreciates a good watch he doesn't know a great deal about Rolex and in particular what's been happening with S/S Daytona availibility over the years.

'Wadda you mean you can't get a new one. Heck if you want one I'll take you over to the nearest Rolex dealer he has all kinds of Rolex in stock and is bound to have one'.

"Er, Rob, if he has one in stock and I can buy one, open your wallet and I'll drop $1k USD in there for you"

We jump in his truck and head on over.
"Hi, do you have any S/S Daytona's in stock?"

Dealer: "

Rob: WTF

So there you have it, another wild goose chase.

Not sure about elsewhere but here in London (with some dealers anyway), there are waiting lists for waiting lists

I'm lucky enough to be on two (proper) waiting lists and should be on target to pick up a couple in around 2 years time.

At the same time I've been mulling over the usual Daytona problem. White face or black face? After much thought I decided I would prefer a white face Daytona so no matter what came I'd take it as I could always send a black faced model to Rolex and have the face changed.

A few weeks ago I decided that I'd had enough of waiting so I approached the dealer who I'd bought my subs from (who is not an official Rolex dealer by the way) as I know he has a few from time to time (which he sells at way over list of course) and asked if he had any coming in. He has a brand new white faced model coming in around 9-10 days time.

Now I've seen them up in the £7k region but the guys know me well and will be doing one for me at £6k pounds (brand new with seals in place etc). I placed a deposit over the phone and the deed is now done!

There you have it. To cut a long story short, I will soon have a brand new white faced Daytona and I'm so excited I can hardly contain myself

Hello Senna and welcome to the club, that's a nice introduction and great story. I'm on a couple of waiting lists myself, one for 4 years and the other since January (I'm third on that one). I too would opt for a white faced one as I find it a lot easier to read.

Welcome Senna! Nice story!

I think you can find a SS Daytona in the US and from an AD if you really want one, but you'll probably have to buy a couple of watches first... I was told by an AD the other day: "buy a couple of watches, I'll get you one"... Too bad it wasn't the AD that I already bought a couple of watches from!!!
