Saw my dad last week and we got to talking about watches. He doesn't really wear Rolex, but knows I like them. So he mentioned he had an old one that I could have. It was given to him in the 80's for becoming a partner at his law firm but it wasn't his style. Honestly it's not my style either but I will never turn down a free Rolex. He said I can keep it, sell it, do whatever I want with it. Honestly, it is absolutely gorgeous in person, although it is not something I can wear daily. A bit too flashy, still beautiful though. Check it out. Looks cool on the wrist, I feel like a king with it on.




Here's the thing, it hasn't been serviced since 03. The crown is busted and the bezel doesn't turn properly. My local AD said a service, including crown repair, at RSC in Toronto would be about $1000 including taxes, which is fine. How likely am I to get a bigger bill than that? Should I send it through the AD or directly to Rolex? If so, how do I do that? Thanks in advance, guys.

Send it directly to RSC.
They will give you an estimate before they do anything to it and you will have the choice of declining or approving certain items.

The dial is aftermarket and the diamond of the bezel insert is as well, RSC will require a change to OEM parts. If you want to keep the dial/insert, you will need to send it to an independent Rolex repair person.

I had a hunch that something on this piece of bling was going to be aftermarket. So if I send it to RSC, they will take out the dial and put an original one in? And then charge me for it?

Should I have reason to believe it is not? I took off the bracelet, checked the serial/production numbers, did the normal checklist of evaluating a genuine watch. Also, do you have any idea how much they would charge me for changing out the dial? I have had my two rolexes for over a year but never had to do the service thing yet, so I'm a noob when it comes to servicing Rolex. Thanks.

Isn't there an independent watchmaker near you that could service the watch without a hassel.

They would make you replace the dial and bezel back to the original type and probably keep the old ones as well, and of course charge you for the parts. If they are original Rolex parts that are customized, they might give them back. That's a grey area, especially in light of the fact it has hundreds of dollars in jewels added. My guess is they would simply refuse to service it at all, eliminating the problem. Your best bet is a solid independent.

Ok, as always, thank you for the info, gents. I guess I have to evaluate my options. As it turns out, not only are aftermarket diamond watches not my style, but they are a pain in the ass when service time comes! Anyways, thanks again and everyone enjoy their day.

I bring all of my watches to a jeweler who used to be a Rolex AD but dropped the line. They still carry nearly every other luxury watch brand. The watchmaker at the store will do whatever I ask him to do, so I never have to worry about a Rolex service center making changes or refusing to do work. Find a trustworthy watchmaker who can look at the watch and give you an estimate on repairs. Or better yet, give it to me. I'll take good care of it and will always remember you when I wear it.

What about the "RSC" in SF? They're not owned by Rolex, so maybe they won't take apart aftermarket add-ons? Anyone know for sure?

The problem is that this was not a planned purchase and so I'm afraid of receiving a giant bill from Rolex. I really am happy to have received a Rolex for free, but I would prefer not to get a bill for $1000+ to fix it up. My current collection is about all the money I want tied up in watches, so if the cost of fixing this is huge, I may end up selling it to recover the money even if I do keep it for a while.

Send it to Rolex and at least see what they qoute you, and then if it is to much you have you have your other options. Take it to an indepedent, or sell it.

Congrats on the cool watch from your dad. I think you should keep it. You got it for free, so there's no money tied up in it at the moment. Wait a while, until you have some spare cash and then decide what to do. I know you're young now, so who knows how your tastes will change as time goes by. There's no harm in doing nothing for now, so just enjoy the gift for what it is, a gift from your dad

How bout option #3. Damiani Jewellers in Woodbridge has an authorized Rolex watch tech on staff that will give you a fair quote, he will be up front with all repair issues regarding your TT Sub.

I personally would put the original dial back on the watch, I'm not a fan of anything after market on a Rolex, Just my
