When is a Rolex considered "Vintage"?
If this has been asked before, my apologies, but I have been told that Rolex can no longer repair my wife's 50 (ish) yr old OP, and wouldn't have done for the last 10 or so years. I did find this surprising, but luckily have found someone who can (he says). Does this mean it now qualifies as vintage?

Hi Jeff,
Yes, this has been asked before and no real agreement has been reached. I would say pre 1950.

1980 for me. a 50 year old rolex most certantly qualifies for vintage and has since it was about 30 years old

Well I object to that.
I don't consider myself to be vintage Tom.

So then what about a 1982 6263 Big Red? I would call that a vintage Daytona. I think it depends but for most part early 80's and before.

I think a vintage is classed when the spare parts are no longer supported by rolex. one classic example would be the red sub

Anything with at least a plastic crystal or a matte dial in the case of the Sub.

That is a great start for the definition of vintage.

I would consider just as important as the year the fact that a new version is introduced.

When is a watch considered vintage?
This is the same question as asking "when is a guy considered old?" :) |

I'd say it has less to do with a set number of years after manufacture, and instead on when certain parts/materials are phased out of watch construction; for example: tritium (or any radioactive substance pre-luminova), plastic crystals, matte dials, non-solid end links, to name a few.
Watches will never be constructed using these again because much more "solid" non-environment altering materials are used. And its a shame, because all new watches for the most part will never age or react with their environment the way these "true" vintage pieces did.

Classic is defined as 25 years old or older. I'm gonna go with that! so 1986 or older.
