Are Submariners Free to Own?
I hear that Submariners are free to own because they hold the value so well, and Rolex raise the price so often, that when you come to sell you get the money back you paid.
is this true even if you buy a new watch and pay MSRP? |

That does it. I am walking into Turdneau today and getting my free Sub. I'll just tell them I will pay them next year.

Buy one for the right price and you'll lose very little - if any- money depending on how long you hold it for and the condition you keep it in.

Bought mine for full MSRP $4250 in 2004. F series. Still have it. I'm pretty confident if I sell, then yes I wore my Sub for free.

I think if you are careful in the vintage arena, you'll do OK.

True, not only for Sub. GMT does it well also, as well as Daytona .
Just choose SS models (in Europe). |

That is a different story. Anyone that goes out and buys a new Sub at MSRP and thinks it will hold it's value is crazy!! Buy a LNIB one for 25% off plus and you should be ok.

I think it may be true that you could buy a new sub for x-thousand pounds/dollars/pesos today, wear it for a good few years and get the same x-thousand pounds/dollars/pesos back...
But with normal inflation those x-thousand pounds/dollars/pesos would have a lot less buying power so, in real terms, your watch would not have been "free".

I bought a 16610 about 12 years ago for $2400.00. I have worn this watch very hard and it never has been serviced , it runs about 2 seconds a day plus or minus. A service , A polish, and a new bezel insert the watch should still be worth $3500.00 or more. I don't have a lot of other assets appreciating like that after enjoying them as much as I have the Watch. However There are no Guarantees.

Hi
i paid £2500 for my 1995 Submariner I checked with rolex Uk, and it was purchased originally in Tokyo, Worn but a lovely watch. Bought this Xmas for my 60th birthday this year, yes a present to myself. I thought a good price at the time, I knocked him down from £2600 As I was buying other jewellery at the time I went back to the shop twice before buying it, had to have it i believe jewellers are having a bad time here i would hope to get my money back but i dont intend to sell it Ray |

" If you could buy money, there would be shops selling it " wise words from my late father. Enjoy your watch, appreciate it for what it is, dont see the £/$s, use it for the purpose Rolex made it, and then you will be happy, and it will become part of you.

I didn't buy my watches for investment but sometimes you have to thank Rolex for increasing their prices at a dizzy pace and their strict pricing. That's why your Rolex hold their value so well.
The price for new my sub-LV is $4875 back then, I am sure if I sell it now, I will get my money back, same as my Daytona which cost $7,800 only couple years ago, but why??? |

I bought my first Submariner in 1983 for $880. Sold it in 1991 for $1,000. My latest one was purchased in 2000 for $3,575 - bet that it's worth all of that.

Interesting theory. Think it depends on how old the watch is and when you sell.
I got my D serial LV back in 2006 also for $4875. It's been well-loved but a quick trip to an RSC, and I'm sure I could get my money back if not even a slight profit if I were to sell. |
