The old king?
You may be right about that. My neighbor just bought the new 55" top of the line Samsung. I have never seen a better picture. It's incredible.

Yeah Sony went down because they got too cocky. I used to associate Sony with quality but now I associate it with detest for demanding too much in price with not much else on offer compared to Samsung/Panasonic. That actually sounds like the way Rolex is heading

I never thought I would ever buy anything from Samsung, and yet I fell for their TV! After decades with Sony.

Going back to Rolex, for me the magic is like with Harley-Davidson. You dream about it when you are a kid, and when you can afford to buy one, it still looks the same, albeit duly updated.
That would include Land Rover also.

Rolex is perhaps the most desired and recognized luxury brand name watch in the world. Many of their timepieces are coveted and well known for their distinctive beauty, quality, history, as well as chronometer accuracy. Rolex timepieces have reached a pinnacle of public acclaim that no other watch brand has even come close to matching.

Like highly acclaimed BMW, Mercedes Benz, Coca-Cola, Apple Computer, etc, just call it uber and very broad based mass marketing appeal, because it ultimately proved far reaching and successful. Originally just a trademark, "Rolex" has become the defining status symbol of the 21st century and beyond, synonymous with power, excellence, prestige, and wealth.

Rolex, by name alone, represents to the masses, the pinnacle of personal achievement, great taste and status. How's that for magic? GO ROLEX!

I don't know about "better"

I'll agree that you can find a watch with wildly more exotic craftsmanship (PP), or interesting complications, but you're hard pressed to find a brand that makes a quality watch that is such a great fit for our lifestyles. Most people never own a fine watch. The small number that gets the chance will only buy one. Which brand would you pick if you could only have one and it had to work for almost every situation?

I like lots of the nice brands, but Rolex is the only one that has been making a "do everything" watch for 60 years. Many of the other brands that I'm so impressed with are really making dress watches. Rolex has somehow managed to make the watch that most folks can use.

I think it's the allure along with their reputation.

The majority of people who know nothing about watches know what a Rolex is.
Just the name "Rolex" has become synonimous with greatness...like someone saying "this TV is the Rolex of all televisions"...

Like: "This Patek Phillipe is the Rolex of watches"? :)
Well perhaps not in this case, buy you do have a good point about how closely tied just the Rolex name is with the "best".
