The down-side of owning a Rolex watch
It is widely accepted, Rolex is the best watch to own, taking into account its resale value and all-round quality, amongst other positive attributes.
Bearing in mind, nothing is perfect in this world, what is (or,are) the down-side of owning a Rolex watch, if any, based on your experience? |

I wouldn't say this is a "down side" as such. You may just get the odd "watch expert" telling you its fake. This can be quite anoying knowing you have spent 5K on a timepiece and thats all people can say about it. It rarely ever happens to me if at all but has in the past.
Also one other point is you have got a high value item on your wrist which can be dangerous, especially at my age (17). Cheers, Dino

I think once you're actually the owner, the big downside (paying for it, and watching every price rise jam another knife into your back while you're saving up and thinking your close to a purchase) is nothing but a memory.
Supposedly the lume isn't the best? my tritium's dead anyway so I couldn't say first hand. That's just me nitpicking though

100% agreee, you see your first one and spend ages thinking about it
you get it and love it then you start thinking after a while for another eg one for day to day and one for evenings then you hear the saying- a gentleman should have 3 watches- 1 for work, 1 for evening and 1 for going out (eg smart dinners and such) then you want a bit of colour options for different suits for example then you realise your addicted (if you didnt realise already lol) |

Servicing is expensive, especially if you own more than one watch.

due to the popularity of the brand, I find that no matter how much thought went into your purchase, some will think you a mindless conformist...

No actual "down side" of ownership, but of collecting, the price rises. I have a SD, date Sub' and would like a 14060M to complete the trio, as it were, but a new one is over £1000 more than what I paid for my SD in Jan' 2008. My salary hasn't risen by the same proportion!

I'd say the downside to owning Rolex(s) is the additional costs such as upgraded safes - annual insurance etc, etc.... there again - as with any 'hobby or interest' there are always the hidden's to consider........

problem for me is for every well informed Rolex owner (I count myself in the category, he he) there are 3 well heeled idoits who have just bought the watch becuase it is advertised in GQ magazine or because its expensive. Unfortunately the general persona of a Rolex owner is the latter, which is a shame.
going off topic slightly, most people who do not have a Rolex go on and on about the costs. If you look at any posts on this forum, costs are hardly discussed (apart form buying and selling posts). I think that speaks volumes.

Worrying about the scratches.
Addiction factor!

downside: you want more than one, realize price is increasing every 15mins, you might get mugged, people think its a fake, labeled as a poser.

Downside: You just spent too much on a watch LOL. I think the downside would be trying to decide or get around to sorting out insurance for it and worrying about thief/robbery/mugging/lost/damage.

yeah the only downside i have is, when i rock up to work in a rolex, i get stares not complimenting me, but stares in disgust that a student can rock up to work with a rolex on his wrist.
ive done my fair share of retail jobs as a student, and some of my managers were not impressed.

I love when people say it's a "waste of money" to spend so much on a Rolex, "it's just a watch."

Future servicing costs. I guess every mechanical watch needs it, but its more expensive with a Rolex.

Down side I just started a new thread Rolex wants $2200 to service my Daytona The last service 7 years ago was $650. I paid 6k for the watch in 1998 and will now have spent almost half of the cost on service. To me that is down side.

the only downside is the chicks. having to constantly fight them off is becoming very tiring. it was ok for the first 25 years or so but now it's getting to me a bit, so much so that i am contemplating the purchase of a long sleeve. my genuine rolex lady beating stick needs a service now...$350...i sometimes wonder if it was worth it buying a watch. let this tale serve as a warning to any young man contemplating the purchase of a watch.

If you don't have a watch winder, forgetting to wind your watch.
My son cracked me up the other day when he saw me having to reset the time again. He asked if the watch was broken, I asked why, he said you never had to reset the time as much on your other watch. Looks like it's time for me to invest in a double watch winder. One for my Submariner and my husbands GMT. He is much better at remembering to wind his on a weekly basis. No other down side to mention then this. I've been very happy with the Submariner and I've gotten over the fever to buy another one for now. |
