First Rolex for a 50ish, employed fellow. Advice please
Greetings
I have been thinking about getting a Rolex to replace / alternate with my Omega, which has served me well for over 10 years. This is a new purchase for me, and I would like to start "gently"... My question is if you had only $5000 to spend what would you buy ? New, reconditioned, unused older model, resale/estate/auction ? I'm actually heading to Bermuda tomorrow on business, and stumbled here as I was attempting to determine if there really are SIGNIFICANT savings vs an AD in the US...(not). Thank you in advance ed in NJ BTW, this board is very informative, with lots of good ideas and suggestions. |

Welcome to TRF Ed.
Savings can be had right here on TRF, just do some research first and you'll find some excellent sellers here.... With 5K, depending on taste, A Sub 14060 would be my choice. Good luck on your choice and I hope a Rolex will land on your wrist soon. Enjoy the boards, Rob.

Are you looking for a sports watch or a dress watch?
You can get a nice used DateJust or a used DayDate (on leather). If you get a used watch, do your research first and be sure it's been serviced recently or allow some $$$ for that in the price.

I am 49, still employed, and like you, has just been yearning for a Rolex.
I got myself a 116613 TT black sub last month. USD10k. I am happy ! |

I suggest you go to a dealer and try on as many as possible to see what you like. Your price range can get you almost any used stainless and many two tone models. Then as Sleddog said, there are deals to be had right here.
Good luck.

Welcome... check out the FS section tight here on TRF, some great sellers If your looking for something in the sport line I would look at a 16610 (Sub) or a 16710 (GMT) two classics and you should get every dime you put into them when you decide to sell

Definately go pre-owned if 5k is the budget. You can get a nice watch for that price!

a boring answer but there really is no bad choice,go to an AD try on as many as possble,a watch looks a lot different on your wrist than in a pic, don't ask the price untill you know which you want to take home, then the new or used question will take care of it's self,5k opens up alot of choices for you,if you end up going the used route then buying from a trusted seller on here would be a good move.

Welcome! Is your Omega a sports, or more formal model? For 5K you could get a lot of different kinds of models, the Sub, GMT II, Explorer 1 or 2, DJ, a Yachtmaster... The sales corner is an excellent place to buy, since I discovered it I only purchase from there...best of luck!

I'm New but....
If you have a really active lifestyle that takes you to the great outdoors, go with an Explorer, Sub or GMT.
If you are more the scholarly business type, go for a datejust or regular explorer. Whatever you choose, make it match "who" you are.... |

Welcome to TRF!
Sure would help if we knew what Omega you currently have that you like. For example I went from a 2254.50 to a Sub no-date, to a Sea-dweller. That said, as said by others, a Sub, maybe an LV which gives a splash of color, GMT is great, and white dial Exp II changes things up. Looking at the new style cases or if classic style case should also factor into things. For $5K you can get a quality piece in most sport models.

Get a Sub
With 5k and a little of patience you can get a great condition Sub date 16610 here in the sales section and you wont regret it. That was my first Rolex, traded it, and got it back again. The perfect watch to wear with any atire.
Best,

I was just in Bermuda, and there is an AD called Crisson's on Front Street in Hamilton that had a nice selection. They have two stores on Front Street, I saw a nice Datejust SS black dial oyster band for around 5K. I also saw a Datejust SS Blue dial with the superjubilee band for 6k. The Sub-dates were around 7K. While in Bermuda check out Horseshoe Bay Beach.

I would go with the versatile 16610. I you buy a used one in good shape for the right price you will enjoy it and won't lose any money if you sell it later.
