Hi Everyone,

As I have a very limited watch budget, but very much like the Rolex Submariner's, but find them still too pricey for my budget; I was wondering about the Tudor Submariner's?
I often see these for sale at a good price.
I am talking about the earlier Tudor Submariner's, which I believe are just the same as the Rolex one, but with a different movement? Again, I believe an ETA movement?

What are your opinions on the Tudor Submariner's and do you think they are a good alternative to the Rolex Submariner?

Or, is it a case of; a Rolex by any other name, is still a Rolex?

I don't own a Tudor. However they are made by Rolex with exception of the movement so they are a great watch. The movement is made by ETA I believe and their movements are used in a number of watches to include a few of my other brands. I think the Tudor Sub looks great. I would have no hesitation in getting one, in fact I would love to get a Blue Snow Flake at some point in time.

I have a Tudor 79090, that looks very much like the Rolex 1680 (same case, crown, bracelet, but with i different dial, ETA-caliber, and a slightly different plexi crystal). It performs as well as any of my Rolexes, with a sligthly different look compared to the 1680. It was replaces by the 79190 that has a sapphire crystal.

If you compare a 79090 to a 1680 the Tudor is less costly, and if you compare a 79190 to a 16800/16610 the Tudor once again is less costly, but ...

If you compare a full set 79090 with a (well used) 14060 the price level is very close. It is worth considering.

For me the 79090 is a cool, not very often seen, alternative to the 1680, and the 14060 is a great daily user.

The Tudor Sub is a viable option and yes I would get one if a Rolex were out of my budget.

Mine is a 1980's 76100 and I love it. Very much the same as a Rolex 1680 of the same period but has an ETA movement. Mine has been very reliable and stands up in quality and time keeping with my GMTII. I wear the Tudor in daily rotation with GMT.

Why not? you will eventually get the Rolex Sub, and then your off, " down the yellow brick road " ( and it's a long way ). Good luck.

I've owned three Rolex watches. Flipped each in turn. Now, I wear a Tudor Submariner Model 75090 (mid size). It is very accurate! It has proven quite durable. Due to my small wrist it is the most comfortable watch I have ever owned.

So, get a Rolex if you can. However, don't be afraid of a Tudor. Not in the least.

I currently have a Tudor Sub 79090 (second one) and love it. I previously owned a Rolex date Z serial and no date Z serial Cosc, sold them to get my second Tudor . I prefer the Tudor and the issue is comfort and looks not price, although I'm currently looking for a Sub no date (non cosc) so a tough call .

There is no doubt that ETA makes an excellent movement.

But, for me regarding a Sub - it's a Rolex - anything else is not the same.

If you can afford it buy the Rolex,if you can't afford it start saving your pennies.
The Tudor is a great watch but it's not a Rolex.

Tudor is a great watch and if it satisfies the itch - great. If not you can still save for the Rolex while you wear the Tudor. That said, if you have the money now for the Rolex already, I'd get that.

If you can not afford a Rolex submariner then the Tudor submariner is a great choice and you will not regret.

Have you considered another diver watch like for example the Omega Seamaster professional?

Got my Tudor 76100 Sub in Oct '89 and my TT Blue Sub in '92. You can;t go wrong with either.....best to get both!
