Price Estimation - Buy

Hello all,

I have the opportunity to purchase my first Rolex.

It is a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date 18K & SS - it is a 1988 model (R serial) and appears to be in very good condition. It includes a Rolex box but has no papers.

I was wondering if any kind person could give me an indication of its value to purchase?

Is $2,500 USD a good price or not?

Many thanks.

go to www.chrono24.com

there are more the 85.000 watches for sale

MORE THAN 13.000 rolexes !!!!!!!!!!!

use the search function and you'll get a pretty good idea about secondhand market value

USD 2500 isn't bad but I would prefer to have the papers

figure $500 if you need an overhaul.

But it looks like a plastic crystal, for that price I would think you could get sapphire, unless you really want to go vintage.

34mm does not have the best resale, so that works in your favor.

Is there any real preference in bracelet styles (ie one worth more than the other).... or is it just cosmetic?

Can't see the wear on the bracelet, but the rest seems OK. Price seems OK too. One of very few Rolex wearers in NZ I suppose

the one you like the most

But in General I would say sportsrolexes (sub, gmt, daytona, ...) need an oyster bracelet

dresswatches like the datejust and day-dates are IMO better with jubilee bracelets or even on a black croc strap

If this watch has an acrylic crystal (looks like it in the picture)
You should not pay more than 1600 dollars -personally I would not even buy it.
$2500 will buy you a much better and newer sapphire crystal date-just.

It seems like a nice looking watch in good repair.. but, still, it's only a picture..

The Oyster Date is a 34mm watch and not high up on the screen for buyers and non-existant for collectors..

A 20 year old Date would/should be closer to 2,000 in good condition. However, Dealers will frequently list a higher price for "negotiating" room.. I wouldurge you to negotiate downwards if this is the watch that you want..

Thx for your advice. I find it really puzzling and it seems values vary depending where you buy from in the world. USA seems to be the place to get these watches for between $2000 and $2500... other parts of the world are selling them for between $3500 and $4000! (like the link I posted above...that watch is in Italy and its over $4k...??

Crazy stuff

He is not going to tell you where to find this hidden gem because you prob will not find a nice newer one for that price.. I love it when someone tells me wow you paid too much I can get it for this... So I take out my wallet and give the person the amount that they said they can get it for and all of a sudden they CAN'T get it.. People always like to talk smack on how little they paid..
I work in sales and I have customers all the time saying my best friend got my product for 20% less then I am tring to sell it to them for.. So I tell them if he is our best friend then he would want you to get a great deal ..right..? So I tell them to bring in the recipt and I will beat their price which is 20% less then mine by 5 more percent.. And you know what... There friend NEVER can find there recept or do not want there friend getting a good deal.. I see it all the time people always talk on how cheap they can get things but when it comes time to get and produce then all of a sudden they can't get it...

Whilst I very appreciate the offer.. I am a little puzzled. If you are selling DateJust watches for $2500 or less... why not post some links to your past sales - OR - more importantly, post some links and pics to the ones you currently have for sale?

It's all the cloak-and-dagger comments and "send me a private email" stuff that seems a little strange for a genuine seller, with genuine bargains for sale.

Although I am a genuine seller of the highest repute
YOU got a point there
seems like cloak-and-dagger...but definately no strange !

I would like to explain.
I was a big seller in the forum... but that's in the past
Now I am doing much bigger Rolex deals
and honestly I do not bother with nickle and dimes
anymore nor I am having any datejusts for sale.
At the moment with the Chinese market starving for
platinum day dates at 60k a pop you can see
my reluctance to re-enter the market I was king
untill recently.. now..King David is the man but no datejusts
there either.
So now that I have been elevated to emperor status...
The reason I asked if you want a date-just... email me.
This is for me to put it down with details in my files
as a must do - really as a special favor for a fellow member at TRF
Most likely in my Sept. 4th trip to Germany where I will take
part in a large Rolex used watch show there.
I still have contacts that will supply a decent watch for a decent
price within the $2,500 dollars range with a newer sapphire crystal
datejust with quick date change.
No mystery my friend - just a TRFer trying to assist another TRFer.

Gosh... I feel like a Horologophile..

Ok, thank you very much for taking the time to explain - I appreciate the offer.

However I bought the watch I posted here and got it for $1715 AUD.

This is an excellent price for our market and a comparable Rolex here in OZ costs $3,000+

So I consider myself very lucky and it is in amazing condition... far better even than the pictures suggest (and they look great as well!!)

:D

TRF is not a sales site, nor is it a shopping service..

If there are any links posted, or ads, they would be removed.

If you choose to buy or sell on this site, it is only done on the For Sale Board, and it is negotiated by pm.. If you choose to research any seller or buyer, look in the Buyers and Sellers Board.
