Gilt

Can someone explain and show an example of a watch with a nice gilt finish? People here have posted watches with gilt finishes, but for the life of me, I don't see anything extraordinary about them, and they don't fit the dictionary definition of gilt.

"Adjective: Covered thinly with gold leaf or gold paint.
Noun: Gold leaf or gold paint applied in a thin layer to a surface."

Isn't there more to a gilt dial than just the lettering color? Aren't the dials gloss and come with hands that have a different finish compared to the standard matte dials?

The text is gilt, the markers are very faded, almost to the same colour as the text.

So, in other words, "gilt" is another word for "patina."

Not strictly speaking, patina is more a mellowing/ageing colour of most things old, like a good piece of antique furniture or the lume on a watch dial or the dial itself. I am not sure of the chemical properties of a gilt dial or what the true definition of gilt really is on a watch but visually there is pretty obvious difference between gilt and none gilt, you can have a nicely patina'd gilt dial and an equally nicely patina'd none gilt dial.

NO, Gilt means that the text on the dial was printed in gold (gilt) coloured paint, newer ones or others were printed in white paint. But as these are very old dials, the rest of the dial has also faded, so it can be difficult to see the distinction in the fotos.

Both beautiful examples of a great reference. I never get tired of seeing them side by side.
