Rolex Sub C or IWC Portuguese Auto

I am in the process of buying one of these two watches and I would greatly appreciate any advice. I am looking for the "perfect" all around watch to wear to work with my suits or weekend in my jeans. I know these are two very different watches but both considered timeless watches. Thanks!

Funny that this thread popped up, I had a Sub-C that I purchased in March and sold it for the 5001-07. The Sub-C is the ultimate daily wearer and can be worn in ANY situation. The IWC is a little thick and can be worn dressed up or casual but if its going to be your only watch I suggest trying it on first. I do not have to get that dressed up for work so it works as a daily wearer for me. Also the Sub I had was dead on accurate while the IWC runs a little fast. The clear case back of the IWC is a marvel to look at and the IWC is a bit less common in the wild than the Sub. Even though I own the IWC, you mentioned you wanted the perfect "all around" watch which in this case would go to the Sub-C. Either way you cannot go wrong and good luck with the purchase.

My vote goes to the SubC. The watch looks great for any occasion.

That's a tough little situation you've got there.
Knobber gives pretty good advice IMO.

Thanks for the compliment! It took me a while to make my decision and I contemplated it for a very long time. It was a tough one but the IWC was the winner for me!

For me the Sub C is a much better all around watch. Durability, Dependability, Flexibility, and Looks.

Sub C for me also - considered a Portuguese Auto a couple of years ago, but the non-in house movement eventually turned me away...

if'd be a different story if it were the Portuguese 7 Days...

The Portuguese is an amazing watch but...

For everyday and every situation I would take the SubC without a doubt. Perfect for absolutely anything.
The Portuguese would be a great addition if you ever add a second piece.

I think the OP is referring to the 7 day when he says Auto but I could be wrong. I think the other Port is the Port Chrono, the one with no date and ETA movement which I am not to crazy about. I went with the 7 day Auto and am assuming that is what he is talking about. Not 100% sure though.

Been here, done that. Buy the Sub C. Later, add to your collection. You will find out what many others have, that your Sub is your best friend, and your others are merely an acquaintance!

Unless your primary criteria is having something less common on your wrist, I'd opt for the Sub-C. It's simply a better all rounder.

The IWC leans more toward dress than casual/sport. Has to do with the water-resisitance, polished bezel, and overall look/design IMO.

I agree that the SubC is a "better" all around watch but at the same time they are hardly unique. It all depends on your lifestyle, vibe, needs etc. Personally I love/need good lume so that would kill the 5001...

I own a Sub, not a Sub C (yet) and a 5001. Love them both for various reasons so it would be hard to choose. So my advise is get them both!

The IWC out of those two. The Sub C is my least favorite Rolex sports watch and that is the only IWC that I like.

If this is to be your only good watch, pick the Sub. Sub should be much tougher, easier to maintain, and clearly sportier. That IWC is dressier, more complicated and certainly pretty. I think this comparison is really apples to oranges. Once you have decided what kind watch you really want, the decision should be obvious.

I like both but for the perfect all-around watch it has gotta be the SubC.

That is on my short list - what a beauty.

Between those two, I vote Portuguese all the way - IMO the Sub-C ruined the proportions of a beautiful and timeless Submariner.

Both are fantastic pieces. I think that they are different enough to co-exist beautifully in any collection. That being said, I think the Sub is the "jack of all trades." Looks good dressed up or down and the bracelet is generally better in the humid summer months. I say Sub first, then IWC.
