Engagement Watch
Hey guys,
My fiance has saved up to get me a really nice watch. I have been looking at the IWC markXVI spitfire, used rolex sub, explorer, JLC. I'm 25, and about to be starting a new job. Not sure if I want to be that young guy who shows up in a rolex. I want something that's classic but can be worn every day. Unless I choose the sub, I'm probably staying away from diver watches. Like a simple, elegant look. What does everyone think? Appreciate the advice! |

JLC Master Calender. Can be had for reasonable price pre-owned. It's a beauty.

Considering your (young) age and idea of having perfect all-round watch, I would vote for Explorer.
It`s very subtle watch that doesn`t scream "Rolex", it`s simple, elegant and goes well with business suit as well as with t-shirt and jeans. |

Agreed. It was my first decent watch and is still a go to favourite.

I would say average. I certainly don't need a 39 to look right.

I'd say try both sizes and see what feels right on your wrist. The 39 was perfect fit for me. You will be able to get some great deals on both though. Quite often here on TRF

That's really sweet of your fiancee. I also saved up for a watch for my fiance but instead of using it as an engagement gift, it will be my wedding gift to him. He has had his eye on the GMT II w/black dial so I'm getting that for him. He was also considering the Explorer II which is a very classy yet subtle looking watch. You can never go wrong with Rolex. Oh, and my fiance is 25 too.

You might consider an Air King, also low profile. Or a steel DJ perhaps? Both watches are not identified with any age group, it's how you carry yourself. The IWC Mark XVI Spitfire is also an excellent choice btw. Happy hunting!

I'd go with the Submariner! Which Sub do you like?

I'd get a Sub, don't settle b/c you're concerned what the folks in the office will think. I bet no one will even notice or care, and if they do, they'll assume its something that's $200. If they know what it is they're most likely somewhat into watches and that will make for some good conversation.

The sub will be the best buy.
Explorer or DJ 36mm also excellent. I like JLC reverso, soooo coooollll. Don't know much about IWC. Congrats on the engagement and good luck with your choice. |

Im an IWC fan so I say a Mark XVI, although I would go with the classic black dial. The ability to swap straps and bracelet makes it a great all around watch.
