new explorer2 question
hey guys, as most of you know Im pretty new to Rolex. Just got my first rolex this year. Was lucky enough to pull the trigger on a new subc. as of late i have been cruising the net looking at new photos of the 42mm Explorer 2 coming later this year. And i have to say that im IN LOVE! the piece looks awesome and exactly what i want in a watch and the direction i want to head in with my collection.
my question is this.... is it possible to get discounts on the new Explorer 2? or do you think Rolex is going to try and create a false sense of supply when they are first released? |

I think the price you pay is going to depend alot on you're time frame. You will probably be paying msrp or worse, a premium, if you get it when it first comes out, similiar to what happened w/ the release of the current Milgauss. If you are willing to wait for the hype to die down you will probably be able to get it at a better price.

If it will be like the Sub C, we should start seeing product in the next couple of months with an initial spike in price. Things will settle out around this time next year, again if it follows the Sub C pricing.

how popular do you think the model will be when it first comes out? Explorer 2 is a great piece but it has to be less popular/iconic than a sub correct?

I would buy it as soon as possible if you really like it. If you plan to wait 12 months to buy, the other consideration that you have to take into account are the Rolex price increases. Who knows what retail pricing and used pricing will be on this watch in 12 months.

edit - in regards to discounts. when the hyep dies down, do you guys think that the discounts will be similar to that of what can be had on a subc? |

Can't answer questions about Discounts in broad sweeping terms.
Discounts depend on locale, large AD, small AD, how many $$$$$ you previously spent at that location on luxury watches. You will pay top dollar for this watch until a year or so after release or if you buy used off of someone who tires of the watch and/or gouges it up and wants to sell. |

I tracked the Sub C pricing and there started to be good deals with the trusted sellers here on the forum about 6 months after I started seeing the watch in person in Denver. I would expect the same for the new Explorer II. It will be a very popular watch and supply may be tight for as much as a year. Can you wait a year to save a grand or more????

Don't think a tool watch will have a premium, but expect to pay MSRP first few months.

If the current crop of rumors are true then buy as soon as it comes out.
Supposedly there is a price increase coming in Sept and with the rise of the Rolex boutique people are saying that Rolex is trying to enforce a no discount policy. If you wait too long a discount won't matter because it will be consumed by the price increase anyway.

I was speaking to and AD about this watch earlier last week and she didn't seem to think there was going to be as much demand for the watch as some think. I kind of feel the same way. The first few months there might be some demand for it but 3-6 months after the watch hits the shelf I think that you will be able to get the watch with a discount.

If the new Explorer arrives in the fall I will be waiting for a cold snowy February day when my AD hasn't seen a customer in a while and then then make my initial offer. To answer your question I think in about 6-12 months the hype should start to cool down. |
