Is it better to gain or lose time???

I did a search and didn't find anything. I was just wondering what the general consensus was concerning watch accuracy. Is it better for your watch to gain a second a day or lose a second a day? (not that 1 second either way makes a difference)
Thanks

I have seen people write that they would like fast but never anyone say they would rather have it slow. That's the main reason for the poll. Keep 'em coming.

A second or two, fast or slow, per day doesn't matter to me, I'm more concerned with consistency.

I think I am onboard with this. My watch loses about .5 sec a day. Over a week lost just under 4 seconds. I can't complain with that. I think my Sub-C keeps better time than my DSSD but its getting ready for a service in about a year. I was board and took an empty notebook to log my times every week to see if there are any inconsistancies with how I leave the watch at night, do different activities, summer/winter. Could be useful in a few years but we will see how well I keep up with it.

Isn't the COSC regs 4-/6+ a day range? Why does the plus range get more "error" than a watch losing time???

Doesn't matter for me. Consistency is what's most important. The expII and SD have been consistently losing .2 and .5 seconds a day for the past 3 months. It's a pity RSC refuses to regulate the LV which is +5 seconds a day fast.

Don't think anyones life today is run to the absolute second, and in general Rolex watches are at the bottom of the scale 99.994% accurate. And in those parameters would doubt if it would make any difference any way a second or so fast or slow. But myself don't particularly care either way as long as it was consistent. And say it was within the COSC slow within a second or so don't think I would rush out to get case back off for regulation. Now most would prefer watches to gain myself included but cannot see any point for getting the back off for regulation for a couple of seconds.

I prefer a little fast. I have had only two that ran fast an old Sub date I bought in the late '80s and a TT Sub blue I bought in the early '90s, both sold off. Of the five I own now the are all slow. I have never had a watch regulated.

Most watchmaker will set to +1 to 1.5 second. That is in the middle of the -4 to +6 seconds. Consistency is really a well running watch. Two indicators are the overall efficiency as measured in amplitude of nice swings of the balance wheel say 270°. A watch can be well regulated and keeping good time, yet still need a service if the amplitude is < 200°. The other element of consistency is the total delta in all five positions. If the summation of the absolute value of the delta in all five position is < 20 or even 25 seconds that is a really good running watch. +1 top up, -4 top down, etc, adding their magnitude.

Short answer fast; by 1 to 1.5 seconds.

Fast for me, the Sub is fast by a minute per month, the GMT is accurate to half a minute slow per month, depending on season.

Well I'm slow by .5 Sec a day. How much trouble am I in? Should I sell and get a new one???

I'm not taking the back off for a 1 sec reg. I would liek to see 1 sec fast but oh well. It keeps pretty good time. All I care about.

Running fast makes it easier to adjust. You just unscrew the crown every now and then and let the real time catch up, then push the crown back in.
