Spotted Solid 18K Gold Rolex Sport Model Today, Wondering it it's fake...

I was calling on a doctor today and was pleasantly surprised to notice what looked like a brand new Solid 18K Submariner with the Blue Face/Bezel on his wrist.

I was riding with my manager, and was trying to keep my composure and carry out a successful sales call while looking at my absolute dream watch--a watch I've never seen once in public.

I was just drooling and staring at his watch and the sales call went right to hell--which was OK because we discussed personal things etc--travel, etc--and just stuck with some relationship building.

I didn't get too close of a look because I didn't want to look like an ass, but I noticed the watch had a solid gold case and crown, and a brushed gold bracelet with polished gold center links. His watch also has a gold new Daytona-style clasp. It had automatic movement.

Does this sound like a new Solid Gold Sub? Do they have this new Clasp?

The only reason I ask this is because he acted kind of odd when I said "Nice Watch, I have the same one in Steel" and showed it to him. He briefly glanced at mine and said, yeah its a nice watch I just got it as a gift. I said, "wow, thats a nice gift", and he said "yeah", left it at that, and changed the subject.

I'm not sure if he was just uncomfortable discussing the watch because he didn't want the issue of price coming up (which I clearly would never do), or if the watch could have been fake and he was trying to change the subject.

When we left my boss asked me, "so are you into watches?" I said "yeah, and that guy was wearing a $20,000 watch." It took a solid 5 minutes to explain to her that my watch wasn't the same as the doctor's, it didn't cost the same, and she wasn't over-paying me

His watch sounds a little fishy to me... Solid gold subs from my recollection (and I've only seen a couple in the wild) do have polished center links, but do not have the new Daytona-style clasp...... If I remember correctly, the solid gold sub still has the regular fliplock clasp (style found on the SS and TT subs)....

I'm gonna agree with Oyster Lover on the clasp deal.

I'm guessing if it was a gift, he would not have acquired a Daytona clasp and made the swap.

Seems like a lot of effort and spending to get that look.

Well, if it was a gift, I guess that he would have received the Sub with the new style clasp on it.

But since you mention he was not very communicative about the watch, he MIGHT have had the old clasp style exchanged to the new style later on. He sounds like the kind of guy that wouldn't tell you about that.

Just an idea.

I agree with evrybudy else tht the 18K Sub atill comes with the older style clasp but with the reluctance of the guy abt talking abt the watch makes me feel tht the watch might b a fake.
Cant say anything surely.

There's no reason to think the doctor was anything but embarrased that he was caught with ~20k on his wrist. He may automatically say "gift", so you won't think he is rolling in spare change.. Patients are always complaining about the high cost of the medical practice and I'm sure he wouldn't want to be accused of flaunting it in front of anybodies face.

My dentist used to wear an 18k DJ but the last time I was in I noticed he had a Brietling, so even doctors can be WIS.

As for the clasp. I'm not sure the fake market has ginned up a bunch of solid gold new styles yet......but if they have, the high end ones wuldn't make a mistake like that.

More than likely, he likes the new bracelet and clasp and had it installed.. For him, possibly chump change..

I know a lot of professionals that feel uncomfortable wearing an expensive watch in front of clients/paying customers. However, I would feel worse if one of my "service providers" (doctor, lawyer, dentist) were wearing a fake. It shows a complete lack of character. Hopefully, he isn't dispensing fake pain meds while wearing a fake watch.

I meant the Doc. If the watch is fake, so is he.
