I have the old Black dial Explorer II and it is the best fitting most comfortable Rolex I have ever worn. I also likle the red 24 hour hand over the orange.

First off, welcome to TRF, Richard. Great and thoughtful first post. You'll do very nicely here.

As for the watch itself, you and Dan put it in perspective. It all comes down to personal preference. I have 2 TT DJs and a YG DD, all of the 36 mm flavor. While I love them all, my absolute favorite is my all black GMT-II (16670). At 40 mm, it's a perfect size for me. And personally, I am not enamoured of the GMT-IIc at 42 mm. For me, the proportions seem wrong. But there are people who love the larger size and that's great.

I'd love to get a YM-II when enough funds permit. To me, the larger size of this model works.

Enjoy your Exp-II and wear it in the best of health.

The GMT-IIc is still 40mm I thought?

I think the new one looks awesome. Not a big fan of the older.
