9 Must Have Status Symbols that Say "I'm Rich"

For what it's worth, perhaps even a good laugh:

http://www.thefiscaltimes.com/Articl...ich.aspx#page3

9. The Bling

Rolex, recovering from a 14 percent decline in brand value last year, is making a comeback. Sales are up 11 percent to $5.3 billion this year, making it the sixth most powerful luxury brand according to consulting firm Millward Brown. The Rolex Presidential Day-Date watch has long been considered a quintessential luxury item, worn by celebrities and several U.S. Presidents from Roosevelt to Reagan, and costing upwards of $35,000 depending on its materials and dealer. Rolex’s signature men’s watch has now opened its doors to women, with InStyle featuring Jennifer Aniston and Courtney Cox among others wearing the brand.

Thanks for sharing.

I got to wonder where they are getting there figures from. How did they determine Rolex had a 14 percent decline in brand value last year?

This actually makes me want to not buy a Rolex. The thought of buying anything simply to show others how rich you are is repulsive to me, especially in this economy.

It's just an article, it doesn't mean that is true. Besides if I expected people to notice me because of my watch I would have been better served buying something else. In fact I like the fact know one notices. I have yet to have anyone notice what watch I was wearing except for other enthusiasts or jewelers.

In 30+ years of wearing a Sub 75% of the time, and a Speedy the other 25%, the Omega's been noticed more.

Further more I can count on both hands the number of times my humble two watch collection has caught someones eye in that time period.

Just my unscientific observations.

I've been wearing my Sub Date for three years and the only person to notice was my brother-in-law. In my mind there are a couple reasons why many of us on this forum say their Rolex of choice doesn't get more notice: 1) the percentage of WIS's among the general population is relatively low, and 2) the Rolex styles are arguably the most copied in the history of watch design. They don't stand out as much to the untrained eye. Think about it, how many brands are making a Sub/Daytona, Day-Date knock-off? From a distance I've even had that moment of is it or isn't it a Rolex.

We love our Rolex because of how it makes us feel, not how it makes others feel about us.

Have to agree and like most of these marketing type articles mainly complete nonsense and very stereo typed.

It's why I sold my Day/Date and am happier wearing my Orient homage now. I've always loved the design and enjoyed the watch, but eventually I just felt goofy with "the ultimate reference chosen by the world's elite" on my arm. Yep...they actually say that...the world's elite. Nah...

Very much so agree.. I'm no where near rich and I have a Rolex... Its just a stereotype.

Millward Brown is highly respected in the market research industry. About 1/3 of all ads you see have been tested by them and they track major brands for Fortune 100 companies. When they say "Brand Value" this is a complex equation of unprompted recall, Brand respect, and admiration. They calculate the scores to create a $ value for what that brand is worth. It's actually very smart for companies to do this type of evaluation.

But the article is a pile of badly written subjective crap with laughably naive conclusions.

Hey the day date was introduced in 1956 I believe. President Roosevelt had been dead for twelve years by then.

I bought my first Rolex - a ten year old 16200 - this year after an insurance policy matured. I didn't buy it because its expensive - I bought it because I love mechanical watches, I love this watch in particular AND because I can pass this onto my son when I pop my cloggs. I'm 53 years old. I waited 43 years to buy this watch after seeing a Rolex DateJust in a jewellers in the West End of London when I was there with my Dad after visiting Hamleys in Regent Street. I'm sure there are many, many fantasically rich people that own numerous Rolex. And I'm sure there are a lot of Rolex owners like me... who just love 'em. Oh yes... I've not had a single person remark on my Rolex... that makes me very happy! xXx

No one has ever "noticed" my watch....

In fact, a guy in my cohort took a very close look at it and determined it was fake

Thanks for posting. Glad to read. However, I think it made me a bit more jaded. I live a nice comfortable life, but I'm by no means rich. Then again, I'm wearing an 8k$ Rolex, not one that costs 35k.

The Day-Date model was introduced in 1956.

Both Presidents Roosevelt were long dead by then.

I don't wear a Rolex to shout HEY I'M RICH YOU LOUSY COMMONER! to anyone. That has never ever been my intent. In my younger days I got a job making $1,000 a month and I thought I was hot stuff. I stepped on everyone. Then when I lost my job, no one cared or helped, and I deserved it. Ever since that day in 1985 I have never looked down on ANYONE.

I wear a Rolex for the comfort, reliability, value, and style. I never wiggle it in front of anyone's nose. Please shoot me if I do.

It's a curious thing in my family.

Those of us with the greater net worths, by far, don't have a Mercedes, swanky stroller, or are globe trotting. Those who live hand to mouth are indulging. The ironic thing is so few people see this.
