Need help deciding on first Rolex
Hello everyone,
I need a bit of advice... But first I will give you some background information: I am in the process of getting my fathers Daytona 6263 back into shape (not new just making it fully functional again ). The watch has been given to me but now I have found I have an obsession for more watches! So I have searched and decided I think I want a GMT for my personal first Rolex purchase. I found three at a local AD and wanted some advice. One is obviously new, one is an early 80's and one is a mid 70's. I love different things about each watch but unfortunately only have money for one of them right now. Any insight is greatly appreciated, I NEED to get a Rolex on my wrist ASAP! |

I have the "new one" GMTIIC and I love it. It's a fantastic watch. I personally like the new polished center links and easy link bracelet is awesome. Last but not least the ceramic bezel is spectacular.

For your first, no question the 116710LN aka GMT-C. It's new, has a warranty and is an amazing watch. You can always get a vintage down the road, but for your first, it should be new IMHO. :)

These are three completely different watches..
The one on the bottom is vintage, but has been rebuilt and so has lost most of it's value, although it's one that others are fashioned after.. plastic crystal is scratch prone.. The middle one is a 16700 and does not have the jump hour hand, a nice feature when traveling.. Something that was a boon that killed this watch was the GMT II that had that jump hour hand feature.. The top one is, of course, the latest with the jump hour hand, ceramic bezel and latest bells and whistles... Most newcomers to Rolex will say to go with that one.. Personally, I would say to go with the 16700... killer looks and sapphire crystal for durability...

I would go with the new one. I just don't care for the bracelets on the older versions.

For your first I say the new one.
Then plan to add some older down the road.

I prefer "vintage" personally. I do love the new GMT-C but I have the GMT II from the last 90s and it's just so classic.

Another idea is to post in the WTB section that you're looking for a new one. That way you can let sellers know what you're seeking. Good Luck

Good advice from everyone! The winner is the GMT-C! Now to find it in the classified section!
Thanks again! I can't get over the subtle green on the hand and the text, it keeps drawing me in to it! |
