[QUOTE=Dob;2891197]...that you have a wide range of watches to choose from and don't have to buy one. Personally, having owned every modern sport model made by Rolex at one time or another, I find it the most legible of any I have owned. To each his own, I suppose.

Where is the hour hand on this one!?

Looks legible when the sun is on it for sure when the hands look "silver" in other shots they look black?

Don't be afraid to remove the plastic cover on the bezel

Big dial, fat hands, big watch. The EXP42 isnt necessarily my fave either but it's far from hard to read.

Actually I'm starting to see the OP's point! The hour hand isn't really a hand - more of a ....circle/disc/spot? It doesn't really have any 'length'?

The watch is really man jewelry... To tell the time, simply look at your phone! :-) having said that, I think the black face Explorer II is intentional to be a bit stealth... It goes with the current black on black trends (driven by consumer demands). I've seen it with other watches and also cars painted with "black ice". Expect some after market PVD Rolexes soon if not already... For a sports watch, the dial on the rolexes are not considered busy. There are much worst. And for that matter, there are MANY fine watches that don't cost as much as a Rolex. However, if the Rolex brand is appealing to you, consider the day/date... Available in MANY combinations.... You just have to do your research and find the one that works for you.

I have the white 216570 and find it highly legible. Part of my getting this watch is that it does not immediately identify itself to people as a Rolex. I didn't want this watch for any perceived prestige as others mention, but because I appreciate the quality and workmanship as well as the history behind the brand.

Boss, I am afraid that may not even be the answer for the OP. If he can't see the black dial on the 216570, I highly doubt he will be able to properly see the black dial on a Sub...

Obviously you CAN read it, but it's not a watch you can glance at and see the time easily. I very nearly had to use my reading glass just to see the time, and that in a store where I'm just sitting down doing nothing except trying on watches. So when I'm in the gym, riding my bike, canoeing, skiing... living an active life with the sweat and the dirt and the rain and the sun and the snow in my eyes I expect to be able to glance at my watch (of whatever brand) and be able to see the time without having to completely stop whatever I'm doing (maybe even put on my reading glasses) just to tell the time.
IMHO the Explorer II 42mm with the black face fails. It fails as a basic watch... for what I want to do. Maybe it doesn't for others, but it's an epic fail for me. No way would I pay $8000 plus for it.
As soon as I get a chance to see the white face in the flesh, I'll make my determination about that one. Actually, I really hope that it works for me- because I really like the Explorer and really want to: so if it works I'll buy the white Explorer, even if the white face is more 'blingy'.
I'm sorry guys if I'm so harsh.
You're not harsh at all, if you can't read the dial, you can't read it, no need to apologize. From reading your statement black dialed Rolex timepieces may not be for you... Here are three pictures one of my 216570 and another of my 116718 and one of the white dial 216570. Best of luck to you on your search for a legible timepiece, I hope something works out as Rolex timepieces are well made!

My white expy 42 is not only my most legible Rolex, but my most legible watch period.

The only modern Rolex that is a little tough for me to read is the black Daytona.

I have a solotion to you problem

-NExpyII too small
-NExpyII hard to read
-NExpyII busy dial

Your choice must be PAM112

PAM112 - 44mm
PAM112 - Easy to read
PAM112 - Super clean dial

the markers are already huge and those are the fattest rolex hands ever made. get the white one and it will stand out even more.

Get a white Milgauss - I think you have difficulty reading the time when the dial is black? But then you think the watch face is small...
