Christmas scare!!
I left my Bearded Dragon to soak in an inch of water in the tub. He is a huge fella and seemed okay when I got him out. Then he started puking up water and he stopped breathing.
I love the fella and was freaking out. I started rescue breaths and back blows like you do for an infant with CPR. He started breathing again. Thank goodness, he seems okay and his lungs are clear. I am going to sit up tonight with him on a heating pad. I almost lost a precious pet, because I left him unattended in water. If he had drowned I couldn't have forgiven myself.....

Kaya - Glad it worked out.
I don't know about your water source...city, well, etc? Unless it was a sterile source like distilled in the tub, then there were bacteria and amoebae in that water. Whatever antibiotic is appropriate might be a preventative idea to fight off potential pneumonia. (yes I know about AB misuse in humans but this could be a good choice for the little fella). Being an NP you might know what other precautions could help - good luck with recovery!

Thanks everyone. I went to bed at about 2 am. He was on a heating pad until then and he seems fine. I am going to call the Vet tomorrow. He has been under his heat lamp since I went to bed.
I am just thankful he is alive. And, unfortunately, he did not turn into a prince with the CPR, because my hubby might not kiss me again for awhile. Hehehe.

Kaya, I'm glad he's okay but you wouldn't think that type of thing could happen in an inch of water???

I'm glad things seem to be working out well. If I were you I'd set the cage up so that you no longer need to soak him. Deep substrate that allows him to burrow to regulate temp and humidity would be ideal.

Thanks you guys, he is a great pet, he is in my breakfast room and he greets me before I go to work and when I come home. He is always at the glass and he enjoys a good pet when I leave and when I come home. He seems good tonight! I just set his ceramic heat emitter so he stays extra warm tonight, so hopefully we don't end up with pneumonia!!

Thanks guys, my husband may never kiss me again....but my beardie is good...
I told him today that the lizard was cleaner than his mouth, seriously that is correct because people have tons of bacteria in the mouth, Well, there may be a standoff in the Eschete house and I predict he will be the looser.....

I'm really glad he's OK Kaya, I know what it's like to lose a beloved pet and I'm glad you didn't have to go through that. I'm not at all familiar with the dragons, do they have much of a personality/interaction? Just curious.

Thanks everyone! He took a VERY supervised bath tonight and he drinks a bunch of water. You aren't supposed to startle them. This time I just opened the drain, so he couldn't drink as much and I was careful how I picked him up. I think he is too fat. He has been on a diet, so hopefully that will help.
And Paul, I thought of more ways he is like a dog. He is great with kids, never bites, he enjoys going to show and tell, educational events and childrens fundraisers. He is always happy to sit on a kid's shoulder or let them pet him. All the neighborhood kids show up every day at my house all summer, just to hold him and pet him and some lucky few get to help feed him. We just went to a cub scout den meeting a few weeks ago where they all wanted to bring him and Ash (my white Beardie) home. He and Ash even sleep in their own fleece blankets at night. They simulate a dragon's need to be in a burrow. He even likes to go for a ride, like the dogs.....

Super worms, crickets, horn worms, wax worms and lots of veggies,,,but I am a bad momma and don't force them to eat veggies. We try to get some in daily.
They need more veggies. My husband made me swear not to tell about the CPR....well I told all the girls in the office today. Yeah it was weird, but I used to teach child and infant pediatric advanced life support classes. No different to revive an animal than an infant. I would also urge all of you reading, take CPR, take infant CPR, take animal CPR all are available through Red Cross. Take a course every year. After so many years you don't stop and think, you just react. It is incredible, when you just react, I spent 5 years in the ER and have taught the classes and just after a few years it is ingrained. AMEN and I thank God for the training I recieved everyday and the training I continue to do....
