Chiropractor Effectiveness
I am considering visiting a chiropractor for lower back pain.
How effective are the "adjustments" in reliefing the pains and aches? Any good, bad or neutral experiences? |

Just spent a couple months w/ a chiropractor for a stiff neck that's been nagging me on and off for over a decade. Did the stretching, heat and cold treatments, and it made no difference. Your milage may vary.
I know others who swear by them. dP

It is considered a 'vitalistic' therapy with no grounding in science, and at best simply functions like a therapeutic massage. Your back pain can be caused by something serious. I've been to a chiropractor many times, and I enjoy the treatment, as a massage, not medicine or "cure".
While there are many different chiropractors, most tend to think that they can cure anything with zone-therapy or chiropractic therapy. Which in itself is pretty dangerous.

I suffered from neck pain and stiffness for years and found no MD could help. I would get stress headaches as a result of the constant tightness. I would wake up feeling like I had a hangover almost every morning.
I went to a sports wellness center that has MD's, DCM's, PT's and LMT's on staff. They started out with an MD (board certified orthopedic surgeon) consultation to make sure there wasn't a medical condition. In my case, there was none. I go in for weekly massage and then an adjustment. I finish with the PT who works on stretching. It has been a year and has helped considerably! I very rarely wake up with neck pain or headaches. The weekly visits with each of them would get expensive but luckily, my insurance covers all of it. |

I have deep tissue massage and chiro every Friday. I have had excellent results with chiro, but as others have pointed out you should see a primary care physician/specialist to rule out any serious issues first.

Excellent results.
Going to an MD will result in pain killers/muscle relaxents that will not solve any long range problems. Going to a surgeon will result in unecessary surgery.

Chiro are bone crackers
Find out by looking back at your movements, way you sleep, sports you play.... etc... and something that may trigger the pain... and possibly visit a sport massage therapist they know what may cause it.... sometimes it's just muscle stress and get one of this for your office chair.... 100% happiness from me |

I work in a restaurant and lift very heavy trays with one side of my body. This results in pain on one side. I stopped going (about once a month) for about a year and a half and then I suffered the worst sciatica I've ever had. Sitting felt like someone was stabbing my tailbone. 4 visits in two weeks and I feel like a new man.

I've been going for years. If you go to a bad Chiro and it's a bad experience many seem to equate to all Chiro...not true. Go, try it, and if it helps...great. If not, try other methodes.

As Dan P said, YMMV, but I have found this to be the best therapy for lower back pain. Haven't been to a chiro or pain clinic for 4 years and counting.
Teeter Hang-ups Inversion table.

I love the Chiro. (buldged disk) Helps every time, however for long term try Back Decompression.
I did almost a full series of back decompression at my physical therapist and that did wonders. Since my insurance didn't cover it, it started getting expensive. ($75 a session) **I also have an inversion table and that is great too.

I've had a great experience with chiro. I think it's a matter of doing it consistently to experience the full benefits.

try different methods even accu puncture don't stay with one chiro.... you will find one that cures you
and check your bed, your pillow your sleeping position check your desk at work, your keyboard, etc... even your shoes, your bag how to carry it daily and even your wallet...(thick wallet in back pocket when you sit for 8 hours can bend your back bone) |

Lower back pain landed me in the hospital a few years ago and I was under the treatment of an MD who was recommending surgery. I figured I would try all options before resorting to opening myself up. I ended up going to a chiro and then combined that with inversion therapy on a Teeter Hang-ups like DucatiDoc recommended. I also supplement with yoga and core strengthening. I'm not 100% better but 90% for sure. I can now do plyometric training without incident as long as I keep up the other aspects. Lastly, I use a dry sauna at least 3 times a week after working out.
I can't say it'll work for everyone but chiro certainly has helped me. I now only go 1/month and keep that up as part of my "maintenance plan". |
