Fell in love today looking for a GMT2
Of course, my AD didn't have one, but he did have a Sea Dweller. Wow, is that a gorgeous watch or what? Now I have a problem. I was originally dead set on getting the new GMT 2, because of the new 3186 movement, the better links and clasp, and the better luminosity. Should also be a little more accurate with the parachrom main spring........but, that SD was really nice. So......can you see the time at night without any problem with the SD? And how is the accuracy? I didn't really enjoy the cyclops feature on other GMT's. Never had one on my Omegas. Help me decide!!!! thanks.

That's quite the dilema Jimbo. You really need to wear both back to back - one of the watches will "speak" to you, I guarantee it. But listen, they are both very accurate, being COSC certified. Whilst the new main spring is fancy, I wouldn't let that sway your purchase. Seriously, wait 'till your AD gets a GMT2 in or go to one that has one.
They really are very different watches and will feel and look differently on. If you really don't like the cyclops, sounds like you've already decided! |

Get the SD. After I got my SS GMT II Ceramic, I kind of like the not as busy look of the SD/Sub look. So...I bought another SD.
Just my 2 cents.. Last edited by lostsub; 12 September 2007 at 11:46 PM.. |

Hey Jimbo,
It's always hard to rate one reference over another, personal preference has so much to do with it. I happen to have both so I'll give you my thoughts. As to accuracy my GMT IIc is the most accurate Rolex I've ever had out of the box. In the 6 weeks I've had it it's gained TWO seconds! That is certainly not to say the 3135 SD is a slouch in the accuracy department. Mine runs at +3 sec. a day. Luminosity, in my view favors the GMT. Surface area, ala the maxi-dial, is in a league of it's own compared to the standard markers and hands of the SD, but again as far as luminova goes the SD compares well to other Rolex offerings with like markers. If you like the clean sans cyclops look then the SD is of course the only game in town. Size wise the GMT appears a bit wider, but thickness wise I think the SD is still the king. Of course which you prefer is a personal matter. Here's a few pics to help, GMT II, SD, GMT II lume, SD lume, Case thickness, |

As far as the Luminosity of the SD, I think you asked if you can see it no problem at night, I would say that I can see mine very well at night. Mine holds pretty well throughout the night as well. I'm sure it is not par w/ the maxi dial but I have no problems with mine. It can be somewhat difficult to see in semi darkness at times, but then again you don't really need the lum when you can see the dial. Good luck and let us know which one you choose.

I would wait until you see the GMT in person!!! When you see them side by side in person, you will know which one is best for you!

SD classic grandaddy of Subs and sleek under sleeve. Doesn't scream Rolex because there is no cyclops. Just a gorgeous watch. There is no right or wrong here. Both are great.

I thought this thread was going to be about how you fell in love with some hot sales staff at an AD...

I was in the same dilemma until I saw a ceramic GMT in person. Before I saw the GMT, I was strongly considering the SD. There is no doubt that the SD is a suberb watch.
Long story short; I'm now proudly sporting a new GMT. It is such a beautiful watch that pictures don't do justice. By the way, I'll be posting pics of my new 116710 soon. The ceramic bezel, incredible clasp, solid and polished center links, new movement (+1 second per day), maxi-dial, and super case made the final choice easy (for me anyway). It has just enough bling for a classy SS watch. And is has just enough heft for a "tool" watch. If your OCD about scratches, the polished center links may drive you crazy. If you plan on wearing the watch "hard", the brushed links of the SD may be a better choice. The SD is very top heavy and the raised back makes it sit high on the wrist. The GMT is also heavy, but the overall case is well proportioned. Basically, try to see a 116710 before you finally decide. It may be difficult to do, but perhaps your AD will let you see one that may be already committed to another buyer; just so you can see one. Personally, I'm very happy with my decision. But you can't go wrong with either watch. But the last thing you want to do is plunk down $5K for a SD and then see a GMT and wish you had spent the extra $1K on it. It's a long term relationship, so be patient and choose wisely. Good luck. |

Here's the thing. I have an SS GMT II already. Had to go to AD's to get an extra link added to another watch and first time I saw the TT GMT. It's an absolutely gorgeous piece. I came very close to trading in the SS but I held back. One thing is for sure i'm gonna get me one of those babies very soon.
