Do you wear a better watch than your boss?

Have you ever been in this situation before?

As I'm self employed and technically my own boss the answer must be no!

AO,
you are right. So my question to you is, any of your employees wear a more expensive watch than you?

for the record, I have no such probs as well since my boss is also into watches at a larger scale.

Just wondering whether there are people out there who have such issues

Dear Mr Horological Man.

I sometimes see watches described and titled as professional this, or professional that, superlative this superlative that. When it comes to watches what's the difference between a professional and a cheaper amateur one? Do the amateur ones tell you the time for free, out of love of all things horological?. Are the professionals the ones that will tell any time you want it to be if you pay enough money?

Yours very Confused.

Dear Confused.
Now I think that Professional or amateur watches are in the eye or should I say the wrist of the beholder. Please just remember this simple fact to make watches of all brands and creeds,a lot more pleasurable.
Yours Padi.

Dear Padi.

At last my eyes have been opened.

Yours Confused.

My boss wears a Bluesy but could afford to put Patek on every one of his employees this afternoon, one on each limb of the players on his NBA team (maybe if they were any good). We do talk watches when I see him... in fact it's one thing we have in common.

I've been in situations where I thought about wearing lesser watches Big company politics are real, and an expensive watch, could put a target on your back...

Not that I recall. But since I've been the boss for the past 30+ years, the answer would have to be NO. Some of my partners have equally nice watches, but none of my employees (at least that I have ever noticed) have nicer watches. But then, not too many young associates with law school debts to pay off or support staff are going to sport $20K+ watches. We pay well, but not that well.

My direct boss isnt really into watches. Hes more into his family and doing all that type of home stuff. Not many of my colleagues are really into it either. The two bosses above him just picked up Milgausses though.

However, it was the owner of the company that convinced me to get the Daytona as he has a Zenith movement one and is a collector himself.

My boss has an IWC Pilot Chrono, I flip between 1680 red and GMTC. Not much in it but I think I just nudge it in watch stakes

This question hit home for me as I had noticed my boss (not a watch guy) looking at my watch every time we would get together for a meeting (about once a week). This went on for well over 8 months to the point that I tried to hide certain pieces from him thinking he may be viewing my more expensive watches in a bad way. Long story now even longer...he stepped into my office early December and asked for my advice and recommendations as to what his first "more expensive" watch should be...this was a big step for him as he is very frugal and we normally do not speak much about personal business. Anyway I made several suggestions given the budget he set aside ($1,000) and just a few days ago he proudly showed me his new Longines (quartz)...I am very happy for him and relieved for me that he really has no idea what my watches might be worth

Yes, but then again I work remotely so I'm pretty sure he has no idea. No matter everybody has different things they spend there money on depending on which things they like.

Would you count teachers as your "boss?" If so, yes. But my cluster dean has a two tone oyster perpetual, probably got it when she got married. and mine is a stainless with 14k white. So technically, I dont know.

The most comfortable way to divert the situation when they ask you about the price is to just tell them that your folks gave you as a present or something (graduation, first job, marriage, etc). Then they would not expect you to know the price!

I am the boss, as of a fairly recent change. However, I am not trying to one up anyone or have nicer stuff. I just like watches. Some people I work with may have a nicer car, house, firearm, etc.

Yes. My boss spends all his time/money/energy taking care of his grandkids and has no interests, hobbies or niceties of his own. He is a very personable guy though.
Many many years ago, I remember one of those conversations where it was proclaimed that even if he had a million dollars he wouldn't spend 'that kind of money' on a watch.
I've never been to his house but judging by his clothes and car I believe him.
