Irregular date change on DJII?

Hello TRF

Uhm, weird thing thats got me thinking happened. When my date was supposed to change to "2", instead it went between 1 and 2, still more on the 1 side, not exactly in the middle, but you could see the bottom part of the number 2 very clearly if you looked, it does not seem like it in the photo, but its clearly visible to at least see the whole bottom horizontal like of the "2", I waited more than 5 mins, and obviously it did not fix itself. So I fixed it manually with the crown.

Did this happen to anyone else before? I guess right now Im gonna wait and see if it does it again, but even if it does not, its really got my mind thinking, how could that have happened? it really does not make sense at all, from what I understand of how the mechanics work for the date wheel to rotate, that doesn't make sense?

Any input anyone?

Edit: Ughh, sorry for the pic, I somehow always forget to rotate them before I post

I was at Tourneau last week and they had a Sub in the case that had the date stuck right in the middle of the 7 and 8. I never saw that before.

Very interesting. Thanks for the input. Was it still running(wound) or was it not running?

Just reset and monitor. If it happens regularly send it in. Never saw this on my Rolexes but rather frequently on my IWCs.

Yea, I know, i have a feeling it won't happen again, since it already did 5 date changes perfectly. But if it does I will have to send it in.

You say it happens often on your IWC's, so dont you take them to IWC to fix it?

Have seen this a couple of times on my Explorer II when the power reserve was low. Giving it a good wind sovles the problem for mine.

Would it occur like everyday? or every date change? every other date change maybe? how often?

Ugh- I hope this was the last time I saw it. Can't be bothered to send my watch to RSC for such a minor problem..

It wasn't running at the time and I didn't fool around with it to reset it either.

If the watch in quite new its possible there is a bit to much oil on date wheel that sometimes causes date drag,also power reserve very low.But if you manually wind the date wheel around a few time it can solve the problem.

I think it might a lube issue? If it happens again, try tapping the watch with your fingers. The date should change.

This is something that has worked for a couple of people on this forum:

1. Pull crown out to second position (hour hand only moves, second hand doesn't stop)

2. advance hour hand (CW) until you get to a midnight where date hangs as it is doing in your pic (if yours is like mine was, it won't do this on every date, only some of them, so you've got to find them one by one and do steps 3 through 5);

3. slowly advance hour hand (CW) until date finally clicks to next date (on mine this was around 2 AM);

4. then, move hour hand backwards (CCW) past midnight until date clicks to previous date;

5. repeat 3. and 4. several times until date changes properly at midnight or just past with a nice click;

6. advance hour hand CW again until you get to another midnight, repeat steps 3-5, keep repeating until you've gone through all 31 dates, then go through them again to make sure it no longer hangs; if it does, try again.

Worked like a champ for me, no problems since. Try it and see if it works, good luck!!

This is not uncommon, although we usually hear about it on the GMT which has less clearance.. The date wheel is just a disc sitting on top of the movement.. at midnight a lever flicks it the same way as you would flick a bug off your arm with a finger..

As Peter mentioned, if a little too much oil gets under the disc, it drags a bit and doesn't flick forward enough..

Just run your date wheel around a few times to more evenly distribute the oil film and even out everything...

Some people are upset by such things... but to send your watch in and have it disassembled just to wipe some oil off the back of a disc doesn't make much sense to me...

I had a seadweller do this, I sent it to Rolex Dallas and they serviced it for free. Watch was out of warranty and in someone else's name. It was still fully stickered as new, when I sent it.

pretty common.

my DJ is doing this but has been a decade since its last cleaning. does yours need cleaning and a little Lube ? Mine does.

my 16750 GMT did this and the little jumper part broke inside. i lost it for 3 months beause my lousy watmaker could not source the part quickly. Harry
