All joking aside, I'm very impressed that Rolex have produced a piece that can withstand the deepest point in the ocean. What's more that it uses the same components, albeit enhanced, that are on their production watches. Well done Rolex

I'm sure glad they put a date complication on it. That will come in handy 11km down...

This is what I want to see from Rolex, more experimental pieces and recapturing the pioneering spirit that made them great. I'm feeling a lot more positive about the brand after the developments of the last month!

Amazing watch, BUT...
why did they put "39,370ft/12,000m" ??? For the sake of 630ft, they could have "rounded it up" and had a much neater and more symmetrical "40,000ft/12,000m" !!! So the watch is OK at at that depth, but go a few metres more and the watch will implode? there must be some margin for error? Also, who could ever verify this depth anyway? I suppose it says more about Rolex giving a genuine figure, rather than fudging it as has happened with car industry horespower ratings, top speed etc!

I think it's pretty cool that Rolex made a watch that can survive 7 miles under water!
That thing looks like it weighs a ton! |

Looks like a bloated DSSD... Pretty cool going back their roots though.

I think the more I look at it the smaller the dial appears. I really want to see some real wrist shots to really get an idea how big this is.

Superlative piece of engineering!
And they had the good sense and taste to avoid spacing between the text on the sides of the equal sign!!! :-) |

i really like how it still looks totally wearable, as opposed to the original deep sea special which looked insane. i think that if Rolex plans on releasing this as a production model that it will fly off the shelves.
and that it's not a liquid filled watch is a huge bonus, since now you don't necessarily have to send it back to RSC for service, since there is no fluid to flush and replace. although i don't think there are any pressure testers out there equipped to handle a 12000 m pressure test haha Regards, Matte |

Quite a feat but it would be like wearing a pocket watch on your wrist...
For something with those specs I'd go with a silicone oil filled Bell & Ross Hydromax (11,100m) or Sinn UX (12,000m). Much slimmer profiles. |

Just watched the video, fantastic, but I was surprised to see watchmaker assembling the movement WITHOUT finger puppets (finger gloves).
He must have just been an actor ie. a hired hand(s)

Impressive to think a watch can withstand a place where the pressure is over 8 tons per square inch. My question is this- What happens if the watch were to fail on the voyage down? Would Rolex admit it, bury it or make up a story?

I kind of wondered the same thing. I'm sure it couldn't be any better engineered but when dealing with pressures this high it is still a big gamble. There is a reason no one has been back since 1960.

They have designed it and tested it to ensure that they will be successful. I'm positive there is 0.0% chance of them failing.

You wouldn't need diving weights with this watch.
Form does follow function but only up to a point-- whereas the sub ND is a beautiful classic watch, this watch is FUUUUUUGLY. The coke-bottle glasses of the horological world. The sub ND could hold its own in the MoMa for the world to see, this one is aptly designed and for all I care could be thrown into the darkest depths of the Mariana trench. Hey Rolex, BMW called-- they want Bangle back.... http://www.wired.com/autopia/2009/02/chris-bangle-le/ |
