Is this legit?

My gf was given this watch some time ago as a present. She was told it was vintage. The band seems to be a replacement, but I cant tell if the watch itself is legit. There is deep scratching on the "crystal", making me believe it's plastic, but could this just be characteristic of an old vintage piece? would they ever say both rolex and tudor on the same watch? its a mid sized watch <36mm.

Thanks,

-A.Sharp

ps. its a pretty cool watch either way.

There are many many things that tell me its fake. I find it funny how the dial is mixed arabic and roman numerals too lol.

I am 99% sure it is not authentic.

Tell us about the movement, manual wind or automatic. Did you take a look at the movement even?

Kind of looks like a vintage SKY DWELLER! with that white color in the middle Lol!

BTW - just a tip though - vintage watches "ticking" are not as smooth as modern movements. They tick less times per second thus the sweeping effect does not look as smooth as the modern 8 ticks per second watches.

...hmmmm...

...these are TUDOR watches that have had the dial refinished to have a Rolex crown added.

...these were NEVER produced by Rolex.

...they are a "WANNABE".

...you should take the watch to a competent jeweler and have them remove the dial and send it in for a refinish to have either a PERIOD CORRECT Small Rose or Tudor Shield placed on the dial.

...the use of the Rolex crown as shown is TRADEMARK INFRINGEMENT.

I wouldn't necessarily dismiss this as fake. Tudor did make California dials (Arabic and Roman numerals) but without "Rolex" on the dial. It could be a Tudor with an altered/refinished dial.

Just a couple of corrections:
1) Both Rolex and Tudor produced California dial models in the past.
2) The "modern" 28,800BPH can be found in Rolex movements back to 1970. It's also very difficult to discern the movement differences between 28,800 and 18,000/19,800 as seen in the venerable 1xxx series movements.

I'm not so sure about that Stan. True, it's not original to the watch but what about all the Tudors that use Rolex crowns or claps? The case backs also have plenty of Rolex markings as well - granted it's on the inside.

"There is deep scratching on the "crystal", making me believe it's plastic,"

Just try my highly scientific testing method to determine if it's plastic: tap the crystal on your front teeth lightly; if it's plastic it'll have a "thud" type sound, with a "glass" crystal it will "click". You will get the idea using a drinking glass to experiment.

...the cases were actually produced BY ROLEX and incorporated the Rolex crown, tube, and gasket and that is why you see what you see on the Tudor case backs.

...the Tudor watches would have been CORRECT with either the Tudor OR Rolex band and clasp.

...albeit, many bands use the SAME Rolex ref# for bands and band parts, with the only differences in the buckle/clasp.

...the use of any registered Rolex trademark on anything other than a pure bred Rolex produced item IS TRADEMARK INFRINGEMENT and violates the Lanham Act, INCLUDING refinished Tudor dials to sport a Rolex crown.

...look around the forum archives and you will find some info on them.

...you be well served by purchasing a couple good books and if affordable for you, a couple of Rolex parts cat's when you can find one.

Fake.

Rolex and Tudor isn't (except for a few vintage?) both written on the dial.

So is that one real? If so the roman and Arabic would make sense. Nope didn't open the case to check the movement, dont want to mess with it. Ticking seems to be sweeping but as obvious and clean as usual, once again maybe characteristic of vintage?

The fact that it was on e-bay and removed doesn't give you a clue?
