He dives but he has some special dive watch already otherwise the sub/DSSD would be the obvious recommendation. Not to mention the Sub would get a bit banged up climbing.

Personally I told him to get a G-shock for his rough activities but I guess he can afford to rough house in his Rolex.

So anyone got any advice on the best extreme sports watch ?
He obviously needs an Explorer...

Good for any type of demanding activity:

I agree with a G-shock, its not about being able to afford a Rolex but I don't like anything hard, heavy and clumsy on me when I am sporting. I also don't want the risk of injuring others while wearing one doing any sports or workout.

If your friend really insist on a Rolex for sports i would say the Explorer 16570 is probably a good choice.

Nothing wrong with a G Shock.

He doesn't really do anything that brings him into close contact so the hurting other people isn't really an issue.

He got a polar explorer yesterday. It was a beaut. I went to the AD with him. I would of been buying my sub with him had it not been for some unforeseen circumstances last month that cost me almost £2000.

I agree. If he is into extreme sports or activities then it is always better to wear a cheaper tough watch than to wear a Rolex. In that way, you can concentrate about what extreme activity you are doing and have more fun and enjoyment than being to be very conscious about hitting the rocks with your Rolex or worries about the bracelet breaking if the ROlex gets snag. Keep your mind off your watch.

Wear a cheaper watch and forget about it, so you can better enjoy the extreme sports. If you wear a Rolex during your extreme activities, then you can't help but look at your watch all the time to be mesmerize by its beauty so the watch becomes more of a distraction to you. LOL

Congrats to him on the explorer. Hope you get that sub in the near future

G-Shocks are pert near indestructible...one magazine recently subjected it to horrible treatment (freezing, boiling, high drops, running over with a car, running over with a huge construction vehicle) and it kept working through it all....they finally killed it via a shotgun blast, I guess to prove that something could.

So if you manage to kill that one while wearing it, I'd say you've got bigger worries than the watch!

Good choice with the Explorer II. The non-moving bezel is a plus in tough environments. But, it will show scratches that are quite noticeable with the finely brushed SS.

SubC would get my vote, the EXPII is also good, but the bezel will get scratched up with extreme use, whereas the subC will stay looking less beat up...

Exp 39mm (smooth bezel) or 14060M (triple lock crown) on NATO would be my choice

X 2 On getting a Vintage Sports Model with an Acrylic Crystal.....It wont shatter just crack especially since the watch is around rocks.

A Vintage Explorer II (1655) would be ideal (Pictured Below)....its just rather rare and costly for a beater, but hey if he has the money then why not have the coolest watch around!!!

I JUST SAW HE GOT THE EXP II POLAR SO DISREGARD THE ABOVE....ENJOY & BIG CONGRATS!!!

As an alternative to the G-Shock I suggest a Luminox, I fits the bill for my strenuous activity:
running 20 miles for breakfast, all day climbing in the mountains, etc. Plus, it's a $200 dollar watch w/tritium tubes...

The TT Sub-C, on the other hand, didn't fare as well climbing. It's due for a service in 3-4 years, after that I will probably choose opportunities to wear it with a bit more care.

(Too big, too much gold and too many shiny bits.)
Shame on you for stealing that rolex from an octopus, buy your own!

I bet this is the key reason our wives let us acquire these extreme sport watches ;-). Love the photo. But I doubt Rolex is going to use it in adverts.

Just my .02 but I could not agree or recommend a Luminox. My son had one and destroyed it when he fell down some steps

I love my OM and IMO, it is a great piece - one of the best automatics you can buy for < 200 usd.

Definitely tougher than the Luminox I have (need to sell that) but it doesn't feel as solid as the Marathon.
