Is it OK to turn movement backwards?
I was at my AD today discussing the mis-alignment of the green hand of my new GMT. While I was demonstrating the issue, I had to back-up a few minutes to illustrate the issue. She immediately "yelled" at me for turning the movement backwards.
She said that you NEVER move an automatic watch backwards, since it is not designed to be moved backwards and that it could damage the movement, and even hinted that my alignment issue was caused by me turning the movement backwards occasionally. IS it a big deal to turn the movement (crown) backwards? |

No big deal at all.
Once you unscrew the crown and pull it out to the last notch, the watch will STOP. So you can then move the hands in direction you like. With the GMT-II, you can even move the DATE backwards in case you are travelling into a timezone which is a few hours behind the one you've just come from. No worries at all, my friend. Sometimes the guys at AD talking a lot of BS!!

You can do that without any problems on all modern watches, including Rolex

If that was still true these days, 50% of all the watches would be returned after 1 month
Pocket watches, especially repeaters is a whole different story though! |

I'm sorry Ron but that's RUBBISH.
First of all, why would Rolex go through all the effort of incorporating/designing a function where you can REVERSE the date?? Secondly, if it was so BAD for the movement, they'd incorporate a feature to block you from doing it - not to mention they'd have it in their manual. Thirdly, a GMT time piece is next to useless if you can't wind back...........I could go on. Your AD's smokin' weed brutha! |

I agree. This is just another example of how clueless a lot of these sales associates are that try and sell you these fine timepeices.
I say you go back and give that sale associate an education and make them realize how stupid they are. |

I told her that if it was damaging to the movement, it would be detailed in the manual. She tried to give me some lame excuse that it should be common knowledge that you would not turn an automatic movement backwards. I'll have to re-educate her. And I'm going to guilt her into giving me another copy of the WatchTime Rolex issue for Chad. The moral of the story is that most AD salespeople really don't know sh*t!! |

Rolex watches are very flexible.

You should never turn ANY watch hands backward.
I saw a documentary about it and all sorts of problems ensued. I think it was called "Back to the future". People met their own parents as children, others disappeared from photographs, a Deloreon car was wrecked, just chaos. Listen to your AD, they alway give tip top advice.

That is funny, if that is the case I wish to go back in time and stop myself from buying all those Breitlings. |

it's pretty sad that the buyer know more about the watch then the people selling it! when I got my Rolex I ask the seller what kind of movement the sub/date has and the lady was lost for words?lol

Yes I agree with what everyone has already said. Turning back the hands on a Rolex or any modern watch for that matter is perfectly fine.
The only exception to this are more complicated timepieces that have a perpetual calender and so forth. Turning the hands backwards has ABSOLUTELY NO effect to mis alignment of the hands in any way. There might be some play when turning them back but nothing major.
