GMT Master II 16710 - date function

Hello all,

Can someone enlighten me on the Cal. 3085 movement, with regard to date setting:

Does the date advance with each wind of the crown, or does the crown have to be wound continously until the hour hand moves through a 24hr period before the date advances?

Thank you,

Rob.

You would have to wind the hands to set the date

In the below link you will find the complete GMT II booklet, explaining all of the functions of the GMT II 16710 and its variants:

Thanks Bo.

I imagine this is so the the hour hand can be jumped forward or backwards without mangling the date gears?

Yes, the date gears would NOT be harmed by setting the date at "wrong times" (like from 22 PM to 1 AM) like on other Rolex models.

I think this is why the 16710 has a semi-quick set date feature?

So the date cannot be set via the crown when it is pulled out one notch?

Might have been a typo Robe...

Your 16710 GMT would have the cal. 3185 movement. The 3085 was used in the 16800 Sub and did not have the GMT function...

This could be why I was confused. I didn't read into the typo.

It is one of the cool features of this particular movement. And it is also present the in th Explorer II.

You don't have to worry about when you're setting the date, as you'd have to on with movements equipped with quick set for the date function.

3085 was the first generation of jumping hour GMTII/EXPII movements. It was only used in the GMTII and EXPII and never the SUBs
It was superseeded by the 3185 and now the 3186.

So that I'm clear, both the GMT II and Exp II use the same movement, the 3186?

Sorry, just want to be sure as I'm thinking of buying one or the other...

No, the 116710 uses the 3186, the 16710 and the Exp II use the 3185.

The 16800 used the 3035.

Thanks, Mike. What's the difference between the two movements?

Boy, just when I think I've settled on the Expy II...

The Parachrom Bleu hairspring, and though I'm not a watchmaker so I have to differ to them, some slight differences that mitigate the backlash often found when setting the hands.
