Would you turn down 1.5 Mil ?

An Original Shelby Cobra and Its Original Owner

http://www.insideline.com/ford/an-or...nal-owner.html

Quote:
"I wouldn't sell it. Not as now," he explains. But he's had his fair share of interested parties. "I had an offer last year from a man in Harlem who had been trying to buy it for 10 flat years. He made an offer of a million and a half dollars for the car. He calls me every two years. I've never met the man."
Hats off to the man, this is a REAL CAR GUY.

That story tells me two things:

- That man has a true passion for cars.

- I'd like to guess he probably has more than 1,5 million dollars!

Great story indeed! Thank you for sharing!

Those 289's are the real deal and what started it all for Shelby! The 427's get all the hype for their bull-snorting-testosterone and mind-numbing torque but the 289's were real high performance racers. They still had a horsepower/weight ratio that made Chevy and Dodge owners scratch their heads. That is a true American icon and I don't blame him.

However he knows whenever he decides to part with it he'll get top dollar!

People turn down that kind of money more often than you might think. Farmers are continually offered big $$ to sell their productive farmland for development. They often just say, No thanks.

Like Shelby, they know the equity will always be there.

Most likely has plenty of money in the bank and if he does then it is pretty easy to turn down any offer.

My folks were offered an amazing sum for their small acreage 10 years ago. The offer would have doubled their net worth. They said no. As Dad explained at the time: "Why would I sell my home? Then I'd have to find someplace else to live, and I'd rather be here."

Money isn't everything.

I agree totally but wasn't the 1965 A/C Cobra made in England?

What an awesome story... Can't say I blame him, his passion is lived out without dollar figures so to speak… and cannot be bought!

True car nut , I can relate !

As I understand it all the original Cobra's were UK assembeled chassis, with heavy modifications done there and here to accept an American V8 and drive train. So it was a Franken-car of sorts. By the end of production in 1967 the chassis were assembled by Shelby's team, but of parts being imported from the UK. That's why they couldn't afford to continue, it was cost prohibitive. I think Shelby had a few american made chassis for racing models like the Daytona hardtop and the Le Mans cars, those are the cars that go for $4 million and up.

No, I would not turn down $1.5M. I have no interest in cars. I just want an affordable, reliable ride. I also can't own any cars/suvs with sun/moon roofs due to my height at 6'6". So that eliminates any luxury cars.

Well ....yes and no....But it will sure buy me 99.9999 percent happiness!

I would keep the Shelby. Life is short and what good is money if it's not used to make happiness?

I cannot believe first of all that he lived as long as he did after a heart transplant and that he did as much as he did all while being hindered with a bum ticker. RIP Caroll Shelby!

I've met this Cobra owner at a few SoCal car shows and races, he's really friendly, and very proud of his car. He walked me through the car, told me some really interesting stories. He's really a humble guy who's very attached to his car...

I'm not attached to anything as much as he is-- I would take 1.5 million in a heartbeat, then hit a few national watch shows and pickup a case of vintage watches, but that's me...

I am the farthest person away from being a car enthusiast. But that is a great story and I love the passion and history he has with that car.

Interesting that you've met him. I kinda agree with your conclusion, too. If I found a gold mine years past and now could collect on it, I would. Plus, a Cobra is great to own, like are many things, but anything gets old after a while. I'd sell for $1.5M and use the money for many more fun toys.

Maybe the guy paid 2 million for the Cobra...

Awesome car, but even though I'm a car enthusiast I would sell, get a few Ferraris for the money. But he probably has the few Ferraris already...
