Ok, so I sold a $375 watch (on a different forum) to a guy in Canada. He just received it, and is complaining that he had to pay import taxes on it ($50 he says), and wants ME to pay him for it! Does this sound fair? I don't think so. I specifically said on my FS thread that I was selling CONUS only, but he wanted the watch so I agreed to ship, and I ate the international shipping cost.

Not fair at all.

I've sold to Canada before and every buyer paid the import tax.

I just told him if he's not happy, he can send the watch back, but this should be at his expense and the refund to him should be MINUS my cost to ship to him originally, correct?

That's why I don't ship out of the USA....too much hassel...I'm not in the export biz.

It's kinda funny, but there's usually no issues buying/selling high end watches, at least for me, but when it comes to an inexpensive watch, some buyers can be very difficult.

I know some may argue that what is cheap to one person may not be cheap to someone else, but I'm just relatively speaking, of course.

Buyer pays his own customs duties, how can he think it fair that a person from another country pays tax to a foreign country?

Seems like buyers remorse to me, don't entertain him, don't have the watch back either. Sold. Period.

The buyer should have known that there was going to be some sort of importation tax involved. Personally I think they are playing dumb to screw you out of another fifty dollars.

I totally agree! I have been involved in many hassle-free transactions for Rolex and Panerai, but the biggest headaches are always when I am selling Seikos, G Shocks, etc.

I live in Canada and buy plenty of US good including watches. My wife buys so many purses that the delivery guy and I are on a first name basis.
As a Canadian you KNOW you are going to be charged taxes, brokerage fees upon receipt. If you don't know, you do now.
Not your problem at this point....he should have known by doing some pretty simple research.

Unless you agreed in advance to cover the import costs, then those are on him, as they are on every buyer 99% of the time. You made an exception for him and even paid the extra shipping costs associated with shipping to Canada.

If it is within your return policy, you can offer him a refund. Otherwise

That's completely bogus on the buyer's part and regretfully just adds one more reason why people put CONUS only on their listings. (although please remember ...not all of us up here in Canada are like your buyer)
Anyone old enough to buy a watch internationally ought to know there is duty to be paid upon importation, and if they don't, then tough luck for them, not the seller.

If you offered a refund less all of your costs, that would be generous.

Every Canadian knows there is a risk of import tax on an item purchased and shipped from the US. He is basically implying that he wanted you to lie about the value of the contents inside to ensure he paid less duty.

If no "arrangements" were made then he knew full well he'd likely have to pay something..

I've sent watches and pens to Canada without issue. I've seen threads like this in the past so I always make sure to put "customs/taxes at the risk of the buyer" to cover myself. I would offer a refund, no way would I agree to pay their import taxes.

Import Duty is minimal,it looks like the buyer got hit with Sales Tax,amount of sales tax collected varies by Provence of residence just as it varies by State in USA.You'd pay sales tax if you bought the watch in Country from a dealer ,so it is a cost of purchase.Duties are minimal to non existent on watches coming into Canada and generally not often collected .

I did offer a refund, but he complained about that too, saying it would cost him additional money to send it back.
