My intellect and left brain says my G-Shock tells time, altitude, barometric pressure, temperature and has an alarm and stopwatch. My heart and right brain tell me I want Rolexes and Tudors.

For me, the initial decision to buy a watch is emotional. When it comes down to selecting a particular model I try to be more logical about it (will I get tired of it? do I have something similar? and so on).

Well, I'm thinking about copying Ken.

Wait a minute, my brain just told me there might be just one small issue.

So who's wallet do you use Thomas?

Is it big enough for both of us?

Usually in this order:

wallet > head > heart

There are a few watches that I like (how it looks) but I wouldn't want to own (because of bad rep on service, reliability, don't think its worth the asking price, when hype is greater than what it really is, etc)

:)

Tough one, Dan. At first, it's the head, but at the end, it's the heart that wins.

As a former notorious flipper than used to follow my heart I now use my head mostly by doing extensive homework and then my heart.

I consider numerous watches that meet this criteria:

1) Price (obviously)
2) Functionality. Which includes legibility first then overall complications (even service costs and serviceability options). I've noticed this played a major role in previous flips.
3) Horological significance.
4) WR (although not usually a deal breaker given the application) and wrist presence/size.
5) Resale value in the case I got it wrong with the previous criterion.
6) Patience. I have great deal of patience unless it's with watches. I can't explain it but if my goal is a 8K watch I need to be absolutely certain it's what I want so I don't reevaluate my choice when I've saved 5K and start looking within that price point.

I wonder how many others do the same?

I too am now paying more attention to more of these same items as well. Thanks for sharing your list.

I should also mention that serviceability options also encompasses customer service from the manufacturer. But it ultimately depends on the movement and complications.

For example, I am one of those Omega NJ horror stories (Seamaster Great White that had problems and came back scratched and unfixed). While that left a bad taste in my mouth for most Omega a 3570.50 would be an exception as there's plenty of competent watchmakers for the 1861 movement that I feel comfortable with.

Now consider my current choices: GO Panomatic Lunar 2012 and the JLC MUT Moon.

While GO is it's own entity USA service still happens at Swatch NJ. Although it's not a super complication the watch seems unique/complicated enough with it's own parts (at least to me being a non watch maker) that I wouldn't feel comfortable with my local maker knowing he's probably seen few if any and may not be able to source parts.

But JLC is known for their good customer service (and at reasonable prices still) which gives the edge to the MUT Moon.

My heart tends to follow my head. I only seem to fall for the 'most useful' (in my opinion) watches and almost never bling for bling's sake.
That said I'd still like a few TT models someday but so far my money has only gone for more utilitarian SS.
