hi randy,
those are all great choices and would be perfect for a first or second or fifth rolex. really just depends on what you like. i imagine some would say the classic black sub is the best "first" rolex, but, you can't go wrong with any of them. i chose the hulk b/c that's what i like best of those four, but the black 216570 isn't far behind (only caveat being the bezel, which is beautiful, but scratch-prone, if that sort of thing bothers you). good luck with the choice. |

The new Explorer II's are the best Rolex sport watch on the market. It is still a tool watch, the ceramic sub is jewelery. Selling my Sub C was one of the best watch decisions I have made, get the new Explorer II.
In the end, it's your wrist, what do you like the best?

I own both but if one had to go it would be the Exp2 (don't wanna think about that). I just LOVE the Sub. No wrong choice... |

As an only watch has to be the black SubC. Green just looks funny with some things. I absolutely love the LV but like the DSSD better part of a collection and not the best choice to wear daily. I like the Sub much more than the ExpII 42mm. The ExpII is growing on me but still the only watch in Rolexes current lineup that comes close to the SubC LN as an only watch is the GMTIIc.

What are your pros and cons for each? You must have a bit of a preference, no?

I also just bought my first Rolex a few weeks ago (two weeks) and opted for the Submariner TT (Black)...I'm Asian and felt that the colors matched my Malay skin tones better than the others (may sound wierd I know - but my wife steered me this direction as well)...I only really looked at the GMT and the Yachtmaster as the other options, but decided on the Submariner TT (Black). As such, I voted for the 116610LN given the options you laid out as it is truly the classic and original. Remember that the Submariner is essentially unchanged from the 1953 classic (with minor tweaking here and there) whereas the Explorer II is a 'next generation' professional watch built off the legendary heritage of Hillary and Messner etc (Explorer I was minted in 1953 I believe)...Very sturdy watched overall, and I think you won't go wrong either way, but I would encourage you to go more 'classic' with respect to color? Good luck!!!

LV hands down.
The NEX42 is disproportionate to some degree IMHO.

Exp2. It's a tool watch; suit watch and you can travel with it in business attire. Subc is a jewelry and sport watch and a dive watch. Do you go diving often or travel often?
Exp2 is therefore versatile. As your only roly, exp2 gets my vote. |

can't go wrong. if it is the first, it doesn't matter which one you chose. if it is the only one, i'd say get a subc ln.

I have owned both. Explorer 42 by a mile.
I have a 6 1/2 inch wrist and it is the perfect size. For every 5 exp 42 you see, you see about 20+ subs. At least where I live. The only leg up the sub has is the divers extension. Sent from my Motorola Razor |

Taking this into consideration, I'd go w/ the black-bezeled Sub. Even though it's the latest iteration, it's such an iconic piece, & I think that played a part in my decision making process when I got mine 15 years ago. I agree w/ others who say that it's a very common piece to see, but as a first Rolex, it just seems like the best choice based on the options that you gave us. That being said, I've gotta give my second choice as the white Explorer II, as it's on my short list for my next Rolex.
