Rolex and Crime
We have had some discussion on the boards now and again about people being robbed while wearing a Rolex.
Do you think you are more likely to be robbed because you are wearing one (I.e targeted), or do you think more often than not, its just coincidence. Thoughts? |

I think it is often coincidence like "Gimme your watch and wallet!"
"Opportunist's crime", if you like. But if you flash your Rolex in a crowded train, one might later follow you to go STRAIGHT after your Rolex (and what you else might have on you of valuables).

One of the sad ironies about my line of work is that it's precisely because of crime that I am able to own a Rolex.
Back to the topic, I agree with Bo. If you get mugged, it's almost certainly not because you were wearing a Rolex but because you were just in the wrong place at the wrong time, plus possibly doing the wrong thing. Unfortunately, there are a lot of bad people out there. You can certainly minimize your exposure by taking precautions, but life involves risk and sometimes uh, stuff happens.

I have thought about this as well. Not only for my new GMT, but for my girl's President priced engagement ring.
We have booked our honeymoon in Costa Rica for next April and have been contemplating taking or wearing our valuables. I realize that people put themselves in the wrong position many times and that is the cause for thier misfortune, but I (we) don't want to be singled out BECAUSE we are wearing expensive jewerly. Unfortunately you need a good offense.
No one wants to get hurt over a watch but one needs to protect themselve. Thank goodness Fl is a proactive 2nd Amendment State! |

The Rolex Bandit as he was called here in South Florida ......
targeted people coming out of popular restaurants. It didn't matter if it was lunch time or dinner. Unnoticed, he would follow them to their cars and muscle it from them. It went on for years until he was eventually caught a couple of years ago. He would have a tougher time today with more people arming themselves.

I think more often then not it is a coincidence. I think most times people are not targeted because of their watch, but it happens to be a casualty from the crime. I'm sure there are some places where crooks target watches or jewelry, but I wonder how many recognize it as a Rollie before they take it.

Don't put yourself in a bad situation in the first place.....
And if you do find yourself on the wrong side of the tracks; don't do anything to call attention to yourself.
Pay attention to the rules of walking around a city late at night; stay away from alleys, walk in spots that are as well lit as possible...... If you know that you are going to take a late night jog back to your destination. Simply remove your watch from your wrist and put it inside your coat or jacket pocket. A lot of times just staying alert can help you to avoid an ugly situtation. |

You'll have fun. My last trip to Costa Rica I wore my watch walking all over San Jose, up Paseo Colon and Avenida Central... I'd guess it's safer than most big US cities. |
