Submariner - iMac Desktop Background
Hi folks.
Stumbled across this thread and fell in love with it. Colemanitis, you are a genius. I wanted a way to get this as the desktop background on my 24" iMac - figured it would look awesome. A bit of googling yielded this chap, which when mated to the correct HTML file and Colemanitis' SWF file produces the result in the pic. Easier for Windows users admittedly but then Windows sucks :) Sychronising of watch with iMac took half a moment and results in my wife coming in, seeing desktop background and sighing rather heavily Colemanitis, I hope you don't mind me parading your work. Truly awesome my friend. EDIT: just realised the synch is out by a second. Arse! |

Very cool! I'm glad you're enjoying it. I'm going to take a look at the app you posted a link to. I'm a Mac user too.

Yeah I was a bit bummed out shortly after buying this current iMac - two months later they released the 'new' iMac, but I hear the glossy screen on the new one isn't as good for seeing 'true' color.

What does that big "20" on the right signify? And what's all of that extra text?

Yes this will allow you to keep Jeff's clock on your desktop all the time.
Windows users have a function called active desktop which can be used for this, it's installed by default on Windows. Mac users have to download a file (as linked at the beginning of this thread) to set it up. Either way will require some knowledge of HTML but I am happy to help if I can. Reply on this thread if you'd like more info and state whether you're a Mac or a Windows user and I'll try to help. |

OK here's what to do.
In my first post on this thread there is a link to a little free program called WebDesktop, here. Download that, run the .dmg and drag and drop the program icon into the Applications folder. There are instructions on how to run the program within the .dmg itself. Once it's running you have to open an HTML file with the clock that you want inside it for this to work. I've attached an example of my Submariner clock. Download the attached .zip and extract it, then place the entire extracted folder within somewhere like the Documents folder. Point WebDesktop to the HTML file within that folder and voila! The window that opens at this point may need resizing; I don't know how it will open for you. Also initially it will appear in front of all your desktop icons which isn't much use. I've resized mine via dragging the window so that its fits the whole screen and is just above the dock (see screenshot). If you then click the desktop background (the darker bit in my screenshot) it will put the HTML file with the clock in it behind the icons, making them clickable, and leave it there, so it will be there the whole time you're using it. You'll have to restart the program after each boot though, or you can get it to open at boot by command-click and select 'open at login'. If you have a watch other than the Sub and you would like this (and Jeff is OK with it) then reply to this thread and I'll make some quick amends to the HTML and do another .zip for you. Please also note that the clock in my example is sized to be 1000 x 1000 pixels so if this is too big for your desktop then let me know and I'll resize it. It takes like 10 seconds. Note that this is for Mac users only. Windows users do not need to download the WebDesktop program, Active desktop (part of Windows XP) can do this for you. Again reply to this thread if you're a Windows user and want to know how. EDIT: pic also attached of a slightly-resized version running as Active Desktop on Windows XP. |
