Is this a rolex?
I've been left a watch which was my great-grandfathers, and I'm a little confused as to whether it is a rolex or not.
It doesnt state rolex on it anywhere, but does have the rolex Crown symble on the front, underneath which it states "Rex" and then "15 Rubis" in smaller writing. On the Back there is the symble and the word Rex again. It also says swiss made on the front or back. Any thoughts? |

It the logo that's got me thinking it is one. Figure it might be from between 1925 - 1935 when they put logo on phone but didnt put rolex on.

Rex is another word for king, so it might explain why they have a coronet. i'd venture a guess and say that it's not a Rolex though.

That is defiantly not a Rolex. But it's pretty.

The dress Rolexes I have seen from that time period have the traditional "Rolex" signatures, both on the dial and case back, some with "WSD," as well. This watch does have the traditional sort of of subdial, etc. for that period and is a very nice looking. The coronet is awfully close to the real one, and 15 jewels is pretty good for that age, too. Have you taken it to a watchmaker to inspect the movement yet? Not sure what to think - replications that early? A later replication? A secondary brand by Rolex? Who knows??

There are a few Rex branded watches for sale on ebay. None with the coronet or Rex written in the font shown in the above picture though.

There are vintage/old Rex watches on eBay that are described by their sellers as being "Swiss manual," but the typography doesn't match this example. Perhaps Rex was an old brand, or one of several vintage ones.
