Noob needs help/information on Rolex Datejust
I recently made an offer on this watch:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2610591483...ht_2711wt_1290 I'm pretty clueless when it comes to Rolex's. Can anyone give me some information on what parts are likely to be original, and what are likely to be replacements/customised. I emailed them with a couple concerns, specifically about the acrylic face, and the diamond quality/certificate of authenticity. I received this reply: 'Yes the acrylic (plastic) crystal is more prone to scratching. The diamonds are added aftermarket by our jewelers and they are VS2-SI1 clarity, G-H color, the diamonds are graded on the mounting and this grading is an average of the group. Because of the diamond additions the dial is considered custom/aftermarket. If you would like to have the more scratch resistant durable sapphire crystal you have to options. First option, perform an aftermarket upgrade to the crystal and bezel on this watch for an additional $150 USD. Second option, for an additional $500 we can upgrade the watch to a Rolex Datejust with the original sapphire crystal. Let me know what you think so we can work out a deal.' If anyone could offer me some of their expertise on this item, I'd be very grateful. Ultimately, is it a good buy? What sort of age is it likely to be? Many thanks |

The dial is not original. That is an issue and Rolex would, if you took it to them most possibly refuse to service that watch or insist you buy a new dial.
The crystal should be kept original. There is no point in replacing it with a 'non-original' and non-Rolex sapphire crystal. Acrylic crystals can be polished by you if they get scratched and it will look fine. The photos in the auction look photoshopped.....that is a concern for me. I would like to see some real photographs of the watch.

as a rule of thumb never buy watches (most parts are ok) on ebay unless it's from a brick and mortar shop that can be researched using google. plenty of feedback is a must.
the auction has now ended. hopefully you didn't buy it? check out the for sale section here, many good sellers to buy from.

I don't understand how people can bid on a watch when they are "pretty clueless when is comes to Rolex"...and then ask for feedback.
I hope it works out for you though. it IS. A stunning watch!
