How well does IWC hold it's value?

Hi all,

I posted this on the non-Rolex forum since I thought it was more appropriate but I've gotten no feedback and nearly 50 views!

I was wondering how well the IWC watches hold their value. For example, I've been eyeing the Portuguese Yacht Club but 11k MSRP is very expensive for me. I don't see any of these used, but I'm assuming it's because they are fairly new? (I think I read they came out in 2010).

With that being said, do you think it's possible to score this watch in lightly used condition for much less in the next year or so?

The Yacht-Master has a similar MSRP but could be had for nearly half of that price in great condition.

Thanks in advance for any insight!

I'm no pro on this. From what I understand though IWC flooded the market in the last few years, much like Breitling did.

That hurt the resale value. I've heard that they've dialed back production in a big way, which should help the resale recover in a few years.

Good to know, thanks for the input! I'm kind of a Rolex guy but I'm starting to really like some of the looks offered by other brands. It's always been said that Rolex (and PP I guess) are king as far as holding their value, so I was hoping to be able to potentially score another brand for a great price.

If you want another brand for a great price, look no further than Tudor! I just sold my additional Black Bay, so I can say that without people thinking I'm shilling. I genuinely love the brand!

My general response for this type of question is that all high grade (spelled "expensive") watches depreciate dramatically from the MSRP. The only exception to this rule is Rolex and maybe PP. I'm very familiar with Rolex and not so much with Patek, so my PP comment may not be as solid. I also believe that if you pay full MSRP for Rolex you can take a beating in the short term if you try to sell. Longer term is where Rolex seems to do so well at resale.

If you buy GP, IWC, JLC, UN, and really any other of high priiced watches you can expect a very quick drop even for the most popular of their models. The good side of this situation is that the most dependable and largest depreciation happens from the MSRP level. If you're the second owner, you get the lower price, typically.

Thanks for the input! This is exactly what I was expecting to hear. I'm assuming this specific model will also have a significant drop off in price for second hand users, I guess since it's so new (2010) I haven't seen any used ones around. I like the idea of buying second hand, from a trusted source. You can get a great deal of bang for your buck, and the pieces usually appear mint anyways.

If you buy "right" you won't get hurt, or hardly anyway. Just don't pay MSRP.

It's not uncommon for IWC AD's to do out of state sales at 30% off list, plus no tax. So, get it at 30 off from them, or a TRF seller, you shouldn't lose a whole lot in the long run, there's always a market for IWC, not like Rolex, but then what brand is when it comes to resale value?

I bought my IWC 3536 Ti Aquatimer and 3713 Dopplechrongraph many years ago brand new and at a great discount via a grey market dealer ... sold them several years later for the same price or more (in the case of the 3536) than what I originally paid for them. I must have been lucky, but if you buy well, you won't really lose much at all. Same goes with Rolex, buy smart and you'll be fine.

Buy right and they hold their value well. I've been browsing IWC Portugese 7 days and used prices are still very high. As with the other major brands buy correctly and you are good to go. Even our precious Rolex brand has models that drop like a rock on the used market.

30% off list seems out of the norm to me. My out of state AD will do 25%, but I haven't heard of 30% since IWC shrank the margins. If you know of an AD that does 30% off, please send me a PM. I'll be discrete about it.

Yeah send me a PM too please. I'd love to get 25-30% of from an AD!

Thanks!

I've gotten 25% off before but not 30%. Even with that I lost a ton of cash on my IWC Mission Earth.

I have purchased and sold a few IWC and I have not lost much cash at all. The key is too find a AD that will discount or buy second hand. I am always on the lookout for a like new IWC on the forums, that is the best way to buy.

My AD used to do much better than they can these days, discounts have become much smaller.

IWC makes a great watch, I love them. If you have never owned one, you need too.

In 2008 I got 36% off. Routinely offered 25% in the past. Those days appear to be gone
