Is the rising popularity of Macs having a negative effect on wrist watches?
I'm typing this away on my new(ish) 15" MacBook Pro retina display - a gorgeous machine souped up with 16GB of RAM etc, etc, etc. Mac notebooks are not the leading laptop maker in the US with a rapidly growing market share. Nothing wrong with that.
The crux is given how the keyboard is positioned on Macs doesn't gel with wearing a wrist watch - both get banged up against each other and it uncomfortable to type on the keyboard with a watch on in many position, thus I have to take off my watch (Rolex in this case) and keep it off for the better part of the work day. I spend many, many hours per day in front of the computer so I'm wearing my watch less and less, thereby getting used to not wearing any watch. You understand the circle... Anyone else experiencing the same thing? Is increased use of computers, especially Macs, further driving down the popularity of wrist watches? |

Thought I'd read that wristwatch popularity was on the rise?

I would think phones do more to watch sales than computers Anyone who has an issue with watch/wrist ergonomics and typing already owns a watch. Phone's keep kids from buying them.

Ha use a windows machine. No such problem. Seriously I use a Microsoft Natural keyboard. It keeps my wrist from getting tired and the watch is not a problem. I use a 13 inch Lenovo laptop and I have no problems with it either.

I use a labtop all day that directly resembles a MacBook, yes, keyboard usage without the docking station keyboard will cause character marks to appear on you bracelet. That's ok with me, I get paid to be on the keyboard hours a day, which allows me to buy any watch I choose.
I see another common theme amongst my coworkers- guys who say that their iPhone or droid is the only watch they need. I'll never understand this, who wants a little mechanical computer on their person all day, not me, but again I'm paid to stay in contact with my teams/systems, so I keep the phone near me, but admire my watches much more...

I had the same dilemma until I got one of these...(I got it very cheap as ex-diplay from my local apple store)
It actually makes for a better typing position/ posture as well. |

Wear long French cuff's and your watch will be protected.

Proper typing should never cause damage to a wrist watch, much like proper piano/keyboard playing shouldn't either.
I take my watch off anyway, unless I'm on my laptop taking notes when I am not at home... |

I work in IT/software so I spend all my life in front of computers, usually I don't have a problem but now with my new MacBook Pro Retina, the watch comes off every day because it is simply not comfortable.

I had the same problem with the same machine. I then fitted my 1675 on a NATO and the problem was solved.

I applied a Moshi wrist rest / mouse pad sticker on my 13 inch MacBook Pro. It is the same color of my Mac. Hardly notice it is there. I have my GMTIIC on as I type this!!! The watch is safe as is the wrist rest!!!

Good thread and topic
I have a MacBook Air and admit to scratching up my clasps. My solutions are: (a) Longs sleeves; (b) Contact adhesive on the clasp and/or the steel surface of the Mac; (c) Wear a NATO or rubber strap; Although I have done neither, I should do something because the scratches are definitely occurring.
