The Rolex Report
Prior to this forum my knowledge of Rolex was limited to window shopping and admiring the various color combinations of the pretty shiny metals :). While reviewing a few threads I noticed a book titled The Rolex Report was mentioned several times. So I ordered a copy, received it today and have been spending the last few hours reading about the history, mechanics, etc. about Rolex. Great book. The pictures are in black and white and it was last revised in 2002 so it needs an update. It was also an eye opener to see a retail and whole seller price list from 2001. Other than that, it's been great to learn a lot of what I already knew was a great watch!

Yes. The book is very outdated. The book / author have been discussed here quite a bit.
Take a look at the Mondani books if you can. Outrageously expensive, but truly works of art. http://www.collectingwatches.com/en/ |

Yep, have a copy myself. While it is a bit dated now, it still has quite a bit of relevant info

As the Mondani books are so expensive, what is the concenscous as to prioritization? Which book needs to be the first, and followed by what and why?

I don't know but over a grand for a book on one watch? Just....no, sorry.
Unless I'm studying for a WIS phd there's just not that much info I can possibly need on a sub or daytona. The Patek book does interest me, but I just can't justify the price. Reminds me of those overpriced college books, which seem cheap compared to those bad boys. Maybe I'm not wealthy enough I guess. If you own one those... |

'Rolex Submariner Story' looks like a nice coffee book but at that price, both the author and publisher can pound sand!

List price on the Submariner story is €620, I managed to get mine new for €320 & that included shipping, private Italian seller not direct from Mondani - Modern & Vintage Rolex comes in at €420 but Mondani recently had a sale on eBay & i grabbed a new / sealed copy for only €200 shipped...there's bargains out there, just keep an eye out

Wow. The Sub book has "appreciated" something fierce! Maybe I would like the latest GMT edition...but very spendy! I would be fine getting a digital version, ipad etc someday.

What's Mondani books, type images, it's much cheaper books that someone has already been shown. Would also will never pay that much for a book. Except for the stock are books written in two languages, Italian / English, must have a translator also.John.E.Brozek, works well for me.

Jeff Hess and James Dowling. Unauthorized History of Rolex Watches.
John Goldberger. 100 Superlative Rolex. Both are great and much more affordable. I would love to have the Mondani books, but I just choke on the prices every time I look.

the rolex report is good for basics, but lacks a lot of advanced detail and is many times incorrect when examining older watches, the novice may believe their are no exceptions to the rules he states, however, he talks only about modern rolex and he does not really take into account vintage watches, this is where you find many exceptions.

I love Rolex books, I just found a small little book that I bought I think in 2005
written in an Asain language, I think Japanese, has pictures of all sports models and I think was called the Rolex bible or something, I'll have to take a pic of the cover.
