It is all on the quality of the PVD process. Bad Quality = Weak Coating , which leads to scratches. My Explorer 2:

So far no new scratches, i am also wearing it with the bracelet now and even where metal rubs on metal the coating did not wear the slightest bit off ....
I would be surprised if the coating comes off .... It does penetrate the metal ... It is not painted .... Therefore if cannot chip .... Well it should not. If you buy a black iwc for 15k you would also not worry about chipping and wearing off and the process of getting it done would be the same ... I hope that i am right .... Haha

The coating is super tough and after eighteen months the watch has not got any marks at all, nothing !... In fact I have to be a bit careful, because if it touches another watch it can scratch it, the coating is that hard. The watch actually looks much better in real life than it does in pictures, it looks very rugged and sporty. That GMT looks pretty good as well and I think that if Rolex did an official blacked out watch, it would be very popular. |

Watch looks really nice but I couldn't do it. Seems to not look like a Rolex somehow, can't articulate it right. But what's important is what you like. As an alibi, I think this probably looks better in person. |

I was concerned about the scratching process as well, there's a video on youtube (you can also find that video in my thread) that shows a guy trying to scratch off the dlc coating with a knife.. if done properly it's harder than steel and will damage your knife not the watch :-) i chose blackout because they offer lifetime warranty on the coating.. also spoke to titanblack but they offer 1 or 2 years only and werent as responsive on my emails.. asked blackout if they can apply the coating on a little piece of scrap metal laying around, so I can do a little scratch test as well on their coating - obviously dont want to do that on my own watch.. but they didnt reply if they'll do that.. let's see.. fingers crossed.. expecting my watch back in 3 weeks! |

Well I guess if you are happy with it that's fine. Personally I would rather buy another watch made in black to see if I like wearing black, like this one for instance. This maybe even a cheaper alternative.
