The common cold

Anyone have a cure?

Man, I'm suffering a doozy. My nose is running uncontrollable yet it's so stuffed I can't breath through it.
If this continues there's no way I'll get any sleep tonight.
Does anyone here have a remedy they can share?

Take two Aspirin and call me in the morning.

Try a remedy with an antihistamine to dry up your sinuses.

Get some Emergen-C, mix with fruit juice, and drink a big glass of it daily. Yummy and good for you and will surely shorten your cold's duration.

In the meantime, you might sleep with a vaporizer in the room and take an antihistamine and some tylenol or advil.

Take a 2 oz. shot of Jack Daniels. Wait 30 mins. Repeat as needed.

Cold will be gone in two weeks or your money back!

Yep, I have a beauty at the moment too. Had it 8 days today and at least two days from recovered. I have a cold for 10 days no matter what I do and the only relief I can get is a couple of 'cold tablets' before bed to try to get some sleep.
I will say that I find any alcohol at all extends the duration of the cold (I think it supresses the immume response).
My recommendation is : Lots of rest, plenty of fluids, cold tabs at night and no alcohol.

A Hot Toddy. Seriously, someone introduced this to me and I will do it every time I get a cold, althought it's not a 'cure'. Make your favorite hot tea, add 1 shot of Jameson Irish Whiskey, a touch of honey and a slice/squeeze of lemon. Soothes your throat, helps you sleep, and is tasty!

Not sure if they have it in the states, but a friend of mines sister is a chief-pharmasist, studied about as long as a doctor. She put me onto these supplements called BLACKMORES IMMUNODEFENCE. I suffer from insomnia so my imune system suffers when I'm not getting much sleep. But this winter, I had less colds than I usually have, actually only 1 time. She says that a lot of supliments are 'bulldust', but this one she stands by.

Maybe see if they sell it or it under a different brand in the states?

Zicam, ful of zinc which supposedly shortens the length of the cold. Also drink plenty of fluids and load up on vitamin C.

Pretty much any supplement that claims to “boost the immune” system is 'bulldust'.
If one could actually boost the immune system it would most likely result in an autoimmune disease like Lupus.

Sadly neither Zinc nor vitamin C has any proven effect on the duration of a cold.
Zicam in particular also has a Homeopathic dilution of “2X Zincum Aceticum” in it. "2X" means that it's been diluted 1-part-in-100 twice, so it has 1 part in 10,000 zinc which is next to nothing.

Emergen-C is an OTC Vitamin C powder that you make into a hot tea, presumably to help symptoms and lessen a cold's duration. It may or may not help, but it seems to, a little.

Really, you can have a cold for a week, or else if you're lucky for 7 days. Such is life.

Thank goodness for Puffs tissues with lotion as my nose is red and chapped.
Being sick sucks.

Actually there is data supporting Zinc but usually within first 24-48 hours of symptoms .... google is your friend

Google turns up all sorts of rubbish, but if you have a definitive peer reviewed journal article Id be interested.
As far as I know there are no legitimate high quality trials that shown zinc to have any effect.

Also the whole Homeopathic 1 part in 10,000 thing...

Yeah, once you're sick no pill, drops or magical elixir will make you un-sick, but fluids and rest will help whatever run it's course smoother. Echinacea, goldenseal, elderberry eucalyptus extracts they're all voodoo scams. Doesn't mean you can't get a placebo affect though. Quackery has worked for thousands of years.
