I suppose if you look hard and don't mind the condition, you might be able to find an old Air King or Tudor to fit the 1K budget. But be prepared to spend few hundred more to have it oiled and regulated.
So in the end 1k is not realistic to get a wearable Rolex.

yes you can.....
I bought a mens stainless datejust, jubilee bracelet, white gold bezel circa 1979 for $850
quite a few scratches on the plastic crystal but otherwise ran perfect and excellent condition. no bracelet stretch at all.....could have used another link, it fit but I like my watches a bit loose. and.....this was her asking price, not mine. she did not know the bezel was white gold, she thought it was stainless steel. I asked the price and she told me and I immediadely pulled out the cash and gave it to her. it came with the original papers, but wrong box. it was in a Cellini box. long story short, she had a huge gambling dept that she ran up while her husband was in Hong Kong so she sold all her 24K gold and the Rolex, and her car my friend bought all her 24K gold for less than scrap value!!! it was all perfect jewellery and several one ounce maple leaf coins as well. I remember it was a total of about 2000 grams of 24K gold this was back when gold was selling at $600 an ounce this is not the first Rolex I've bought from someone with a gambling problem, but it was the best deal I've ever gotten on a Rolex don't get me wrong.....I'm not some kind of leech hanging around casinos waiting for people to lose. it just happens I know lots of gamblers the Rolex is always first to go when you need money fast |

Sure, if you are in the right place at the right time....And know what you are doing and looking at. I have purchased several sport models for under $1000, to get them in working order was pricey, but I still came out way ahead.

Great answers, it seems bargains can be had, but up the budget a bit and the quality improves. My ultimate would be a lady-sub but the budget would have to really increase a lot! :D
