To be honest, I slept thru the last one, here in NYC... But I am well aware of the story of the boy who cried wolf. All in all I am overly skeptical being from the city, of any possible damage, but I guess we will have to wait and see. This storm has seemed to been devastating else where. Will post an update post storm.

I'm glad it missed Florida!

Looks like it's going to loose some of it's strength before hitting shore again!

Be careful everyone. Isaac was a cat 1 here in the New Orleans area and it still flooded a lot of homes and killed 2 people. Don't under estimate, get plenty of water, batteries, snacks/food and alcohol....in case you have to be holed up for a few days. I always get enough supplies to last about 5 days to a week. If you can a generator that is fabulous and get about 40 or 50 gallons of gas to run it.

After four days of breathless descriptions of the coming weather apocalypse on TV, I'm betting that "Frankenstorm Sandy" doesn't live up to the hype. I'm getting to the point where I no longer pay much attention to the NWS and TV meteorologists.

I have no respect for the self loathing media bastids.

On a side note sandy did give me an excuse to buy a nice high end torch.

Gosh today the moment they announced subway closures, I was in the market getting breakfast and a HORDE of people ran into. It was like zombie apocalypse was announced... funny how everyone could have bought food yesterday but waited for the very last second.

This is a large tropical cyclone storm at 500 plus nautical miles so the warnings are appropriate. With full moon the coastal areas will see alot of water where there normally isn't.

Having been through many hurricanes here in Florida you are correct Jim, nothing to full with if it hits.

This is one of the rare times I'm satisfied being 800ft from and 15ft up from the Bay.

Tested the genny, got a mass of solid material out of the dog, ready to go.

My wife and I own a motel within a block of the beach in Seaside Heights, NJ. My son and I storm proofed as much as possible yesterday but I have a bad feeling about this storm. Irene last year did not do any damage but with the full moon and the track of this sucker I'm not optimistic at all.

Good luck. It's always worse when the storm comes at night.

Driving around yesterday, it was a little sad to see all the Halloween decorations being taken down. I was also impressed by all the trees dumping their leaves in a hurry. Fortunately the few large trees near my home have lost nearly all their leaves and should survive the winds, that's not true for many trees in my neighborhood. I'm sure I'll lose a couple of trees in the back nine, but they won't cause any damage. The winds are already starting to pick up, and it's been raining for 24 hours.
I'm a little concerned that the Sandy's winds are not starting to slow down yet as they expected.

I'm more worried about the effects of the rain with flooding, etc.
Throw in the downed trees that are inevitable with a few days of no power and it could be a real mess.
At least the heaviest rains are predicted to be north of me.
Don't underestimate the power and destruction of the storm surge. I saw it all the time, and this should be a big one. A category one can still throw things around and cause a great deal of damage.
If I were you Gunter, I would think about taking your wife to the hospital and evacuating with your pets, though I'm sure you know your elevation and likelihood of a serious flood. Is your roof bolted down to the slab? Most beach property thus far north is not really hurricane ready, even newer construction. I looked at a new home "down the shore" and it was not constructed the way I would have wanted for a property only a few yards from the beach. My hospital has plans for essential employees to stay in house and in nearby hotels if necessary.
Stay safe everyone, and don't take any reckless and unnecessary risks.
