I'm in New Providence, NJ and I made out ok here, a tree or two down in the yard. There are still widespread power outages and many roads closed around here. I know a few people who had trees go through their house but fortunately nobody was hurt. I know a few people with homes down the shore who aren't sure whether their house is still standing as they can't get back there. As we had generator power here for a while, my house was a makshift warming/charging/office space for friends and family. We got power back quickly so my generator is now lent out to a friend so he can have a warm house. It's still going to be a while before everyone gets power back here. Getting tired of these big storms rolling through! I'm a volunteer firefighter and we've been busy since the storm hit. Lots of sleepless nights.

I got back on Saturday from the Bahamas. From what I've seen and heard, I definitely got off lightly compared to anybody else affected by the storm.

My thoughts are with all those affected.

I apologise for my naive initial post, as coming from the UK, I've never ever experienced such an event. Showing true Brit stiff upper lip at the time of my post (and being a little drunk) I now think my post was somewhat stupid in light of the aftermath.

It was luck that when deciding where to go on this recent vacation, is was a coin flip on whether to go to New York or the Bahamas. It was just a 2 week break as the kids were on school break so I wasn't fussed where we went. Luckily, we chose the Bahamas from the two locations. No real reason, just a spur of the moment thing booking literally a week before departure.

We could have easily had been in NY.

We had no idea that Sandy was coming when we left. It wasn't even on our radar. The first we heard there was a storm coming was literally within hours of arriving as the hotel we were staying in were battening down windows and doors.

Anyway, my sincere apologies!!!

All the best,
Paul.

I hate to hear that so many people lost their homes. I am glad for everyone that made it through with minimal damage.
