Mr. Newman many have dropped from the supermarket tabloids but he was always quite active in the racing world and other business endeavors until his death.

Looks like the ring on his right hand is some sort of championship ring. Perhaps for his racing team winning the IndyCar Championship.

He lived in Shaker Hts Ohio, not far from where I grew up. My dad was his aunt's music teacher, never heard anything but good things about him. The father of a girl I dated after high school was his college roommate, don't remember the college though. Somewhere local, maybe Mount Union.

I think I've read somewhere that the "modern" / automatic Daytona was his daily wearing watch and that he got it as a present from his wife.

I have met him several times at lime rock and saw him in the summer of 2007 at lime rock. He looked bad, skin yellowed etc whenever I saw him at the track which was often he wore a timex ironman watch. His last request I know in early aug or late July was to run a race car at lime rock, they closed the track for him and he did just that.

I remember now that I've read about the modern Daytona Mr Newman was wearing in the Dowling/Hess book "Best Of Time. An Unauthorized History Of Rolex Wristwatches"...

That's kind of a sad picture. Looks as though it was taken after he became ill with cancer.

There is no need to screw them in unless you plan to dive into 30' deep water and start pushing things

Great pic Dan, thanks for sharing.

Perfect example of adapting a comfortable bracelet to a favorite watch.

Rolex Marketing should take a cue...as comfortable as an old sweatshirt...

You can't help but look at this photo of Newman and wonder, "what the hell" is he thinking.

Very enlightening!

I thought Rolexes had to be screwed down to be even water resistant.
