Ready to purchase Presidential

Hello all, Im from AZ and im about to buy a watch from a very good friend. I want him to feel like i trust him (which I do) but its alot of money so im going to get some input/advice wherever i can before paying for it.

Ive been to a few rolex dealers here in the valley to try to get an idea of the current value of the watch but I know jewlers markup is quite a bit.

Please excuse me as im a bit nieve to these watches. Any help or info on how I should price/purchase this watch is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Lamar

ok lets break down what we can see here, the case has the correct hallmarks in correct places i believe the case to be original although close ups of the hallmarks would be better to confirm for sure, the dial is aftermarket, that setting of diamonds is not by rolex. The bezel is aftermarket also , non original.

Now to value, the band has references on the inside of the clasp, please take a photo of these engravings, value is effected greatly if the band is not original, from your photos you can't tell. The band looks in poor shape, it looks stretched and needs a polish desperately, this will effect value. The aethetic shape of the band indicates the watch has not been serviced lately, as a polish is usually included, this must be taken into account. The dial is flat which indicates it's a quickset, as non qucikset dials bevel downwards on the edges, your date has an open 9, indicating this watch is likely an early 18038. However, a photo of between the lugs would help verify this. As for value a good price is about $6500 for this watch assuming the band is original and a top price is $8000 in my books if your buying off a dealer with some kind of guarantee, the watch needs some work, likely a service and good polishing, i hope this helps regards
ps. add some more pictures and i will verify your band. regards
